VALENTINE’S DAY: GOLD HEART NAILS

PHOTOGRAPHY, POST, GRAPHIC DESIGN: KRISTIN ESS

If you’re like us, then you know there are never enough ways to “put a heart on it” and obviously the month of February gets a little extra love. We’ve been playing with tons of different red and gold combos lately and we think we’ve found the perfect combo for a Valentine’s Day mani. Here we go…

(a collaboration with Treat Collection)

  1. We painted all nails with the perfect non-toxic super rich red — “Paris, Paris” by Treat Collection, (also available to our European readers here! Hooray!) You’ll want to wait a couple of hours in between painting your nails red & adding the gold leaf hearts so that the gold leaf sticks does not stick to the red polish. You’ll want it to stick to the clear polish in step 5.
  2. Once your color is completely dry, grab your book of gold leaf sheets and select a single sheet.
  3. Break the piece into smaller pieces, about the size of your finger.
  4. Get out a toothpick and dip it in your clear top coat. Here we used the clear top coat which is also from Treat Collection.
  5. Okay, remember our heart tutorial here? Use this method with the toothpick to make a clear heart on top of your nail. You can actually make any shape using this method (like lips or an “xo”), but we think a heart is easiest to start with. Make sure you’re in a well lit place so you can see the clear while you’re making your heart shape.
  6. Pick up a piece of gold leaf and lay it over the clear heart and tap it lightly a few times.
  7. Now wait for 10 minutes while the polish and gold leaf FULLY adhere together.
  8. Use an paint brush to dust off the excess gold leaf.
  9. Once you clear all the gold, the heart is what’s left! Use your “Paris, Paris” to perfect the edges of the gold heart if you feel like you need it.
  10. Add a clear coat to the top of each nail.

These nails are so gorgeous. The gold starts to chip away after a few days but we kind of love it because distressed gold leafing is still very pretty.

MANI MONDAY: WASHI TAPE GLITTER HEART

photos/post/design: Kristin Ess

It’s almost Valentine’s day!! Whether you’re celebrating or not, a heart mani always looks simple + sweet. After trying to get a perfect heart a million different ways, I finally figured out the best way to do it. Washi tape! You can order it online, find it at a stationery store, or I’ve even seen it at Target in the stationery section. Washi tape is much less sticky than regular tape so you don’t have to worry about it adhering and pulling off your base color so much. Okay, here’s how we got the perfect heart!

  1. You’ll need a red, a metallic gold + a gold glitter. I used this for my red, this for my metallic gold + this for my gold glitter.
  2. You’ll also need washi tape and small scissors. I used the kind for trimming brows.
  3. Paint your nails with the red and let them dry for a few hours. I like to let the base dry overnight just to be safe.
  4. Cut a 2-3″ piece of washi tape, fold it in half but leave the ends apart like you see in photo 4.
  5. Place the open ends of the washi tape on your pointer finger on the opposite hand you cut with. Cut out a half heart that is a little less than half the width of the nail you’re putting the heart on.
  6. Gently peel your washi tape open to see the full heart.
  7. Place it on the nail and press the edges with a soft, dry, clean paintbrush.
  8. Paint the metallic coat first. This will give you the perfect heart shape, which you can’t get when using glitter polish alone.
  9. Now add the glitter polish on top of that.
  10. Peel your tape off slowly while the metallic and glitter polishes are still wet. You don’t want them to dry to the washi tape.

You can use a detailing brush to add more glitter to the heart if you want to. Add a top coat once the glitter heart has dried. xo
