MICRONEEDLING 101

I tried microneedling by a professional a few months ago (thank you Mashell Tabe!) and have loved watching the transformation in my skin by continuing it at home 5 x a week. It plumps up the skin, making my fine lines look less visible. How? By activating epidermal growth factors kind of like a superficial acupuncture (think about it, if you get a little cut somewhere, your body sends all of its healing agents to the cut to repair it). A derma roller typically has over 500 stainless steel microneedles that roll over you skin making mini punctures as it goes. This benefits you in two ways: first it signals to your body to send healing soldiers to aid in collagen production and second it helps the serum penetrate deeper. Here’s how to do it at home:

I was very afraid of the needles but it didn’t hurt and actually started to feel good LOL. I like to do it in the morning after showering because it really plumps up my skin for the day.

DIY ANTI-ACNE ANTI-SCARRING MASK

Here’s what you need to know. Manuka honey is created by bees who feed on the nectar of the Manuka flower, found in New Zealand. The ingestible and topical qualities and benefits have been renowned for many years. My friends and I can not stop talking about it. I did a personal experiment for two weeks, using this mask every other night, and can’t begin to tell you about the transformation in my skin. I don’t have a single blemish, I no longer have a dry chapped chin and my skin is mega-moisturized and plump. Almost like my fine lines shrunk! It’s almost weird. I might start doing it every night to see what miracles happen then! Anyway, I’m dying for you guys to try it and tell me if you have the same findings too. I’ve read about crash victims using it and healing everything with no scars too. Here’s how, just make sure you test a small area of your skin first to make sure you’re not allergic:

TOOLS:

  • A Jar of Manuka Honey — Make sure it’s 100% raw with a Bio Active 12+ or higher and it’s cold-pressed, which makes it anti-bacterial. I love this one used on Chloe below as well as this one.
  • A Muslin Cloth (or wash cloth) — this three-pack is my favorite. I’m going to do a tutorial dedicated specifically to why you have to switch from splashing your face to using a muslin cloth to wipe it clean. It gently exfoliates while it wipes and will change the texture of your skin for the better.

If you’re not a DIY kind of gal, start looking for products with Manuka Honey in them, if only for the intense moisture it provides! There’s this Manuka Mask Single ($4), this face mask and this moisturizer.

**Disclaimer: I am not a doctor and skincare is not one-size-fits-all. As with all products that you put on your skin, be your own advocate, talk to your dermatologist, do a patch test and decide for yourself what is right for you.

THE FOUNDATION GOLDEN RULE

I realized the other day that when it comes to applying foundation, I always have our models use a foundation brush or egg-shaped sponge, because those are what I use on my clients. But when I apply my own, I always use my fingers. Probably partly because I clean brushes and sponges so often for my kit, that I don’t want to add another one, and partly because I love how my fingers warm up the foundation and I can really tap it in. And of course, it’s the fastest route. But using your fingers can go awry quickly if you don’t apply it in layers! I cannot stress this enough: apply only one pump, rub it between your fingers, tap it into skin, then go back and do only one more pump, rub it between your fingers and tap it into your skin. Stop and take a second to see if that’s enough of if there are a few areas that need a little more coverage then pump one more time, rub it in between your fingers and spot apply. That’s the only way to do it. If you pump three or more times and apply it that thickly, you’re left with a heavy and streaky application that will only end up all over your phone, even after you powder it. No bueno. Here’s how to get better results:

TOOLS:

tbd foundation golden ruleSTEPS

STEPS:

  1. Hold your fingers together tightly and use your other hand to pump only one time onto them as demonstrated above.
  2. Rub your fingers together to thin it out.
  3. I like to tap it as I rub it all over my face and neck. Try it and let me know if you like it too!
  4. Really get into the hard-to-reach areas.
  5. Repeat step one by pumping only one time into your fingers.
  6. Repeat step 2 by rubbing your fingers together to thin it out.
  7. Repeat steps 3 and 4 by tapping and rubbing it all over. If you need more coverage, you can add another layer.
  8. Set with powder (not shown but this is my favorite powder right now ($$)).

If you’re a sponge or foundation-brush-kind-of gal, do this same golden rule by only applying one pump at a time so you only apply one layer at a time. It’s the only way to help it become one with your skin instead of mostly sitting on top of it.

AMP UP YOUR SHEET MASK

Last year I shared my MultiMasking 101 Tutorial with you and today I want to show you how to get even more out of both of your serum and your sheet masks. Both are incredibly powerful skincare tools on their own, but paired together the right way and you will be emailing me about how plump and radiant your skin is! There really is nothing like it unless you spend an hour getting a facial at the spa. So the next time you have a first date or a big event where you really want to shine, spend ten minutes spoiling your skin and bringing it back to life with this technique. After five minutes wearing a sheet mask, lift it up and apply a face serum, then re-cover your face with the sheet and let it double-penetrate for another five minutes. The power of the two  together at the right moment is pure magic. Here’s how:

FAVORITE SHEET MASKS:

FAVORITE SERUMS:

  • Peptide — I personally use this Hydropeptide Serum ($$$) twice a day, every day. I don’t use it on my clients because I don’t see them regularly enough for it to work its magic.
  • Anti-Aging — I love this one ($$) because it has retinol in it.
  • Anti-Acne — This one ($) really tackles unhappy skin, calms it down and clears it up.

STEPS:

  1. Open up the sheet mask and lay it over your face as demonstrated above.
  2. Rest for 5 minutes and let it do its job.
  3. Lift the sheet and fold it gently across the top half of your forehead.
  4. Pump your favorite serum onto your fingers and rub them together with your other hand.
  5. Apply the serum all over the face and neck in a gentle patting motion.
  6. Unfold the sheet from your forehead and cover your face again.
  7. Rest for another 5 minutes then remove the sheet. Pat any excess serum into the skin.

Oh and this is the Joan Crawford Needlepoint Pillow!
