D.I.Y. NATURAL LIP SCRUB

Over the last few years I’ve shared my favorite ways to get soft and smooth lips (revisit the Winter Lip Fix, The Brush Off and the Chapped Lip Undo). Today I’m giving you an all-natural alternative that tastes and smells amazing! This DIY is especially brilliant because it has not one but two benefits: the sugar exfoliates while the coconut oil moisturizes. My dear friend Angelique Cabral took time from shooting her CBS pilot Life in Pieces to show us how:

TOOLS:

  • Any Sugar You Have On Hand — I happened to have a white all-purpose sugar in my kitchen cabinet, but I also love an organic raw sugar too. You’ll only need a 1/2 teaspoon but I made a full teaspoon for photographic purposes.
  • Coconut Oil — I used this one because I also use it to remove my most stubborn eye makeup and I use it for oil pulling! You’ll also only need a 1/2 teaspoon!
  • Your Favorite Lip Serum or Lip Balm (optional)

STEPS:

  1. Pour the Sugar into the Coconut Oil.
  2. Mix it together with your finger by swirling it around until it becomes a paste. Coconut oil melts into a liquid when it’s heated up but you’ll be working fast enough that you’ll be ok.
  3. Cover your entire lip area with the paste and start scrubbing back and forth with your finger.
  4. Stretch your smile so it’s taut and continue scrubbing.
  5. Let it sit for a minute for extra moisture if you wish.
  6. Wipe it off with a tissue. If you made a bit of a mess, you might opt for a wet washcloth instead!
  7. This step is optional because they’ll already be really moisturized from the coconut oil, but you’re welcome to seal the deal and finish with a lip serum or balm.

AT HOME FACIAL SERIES

TUTORIAL + PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY NADINE, GRAPHIC DESIGN BY EUNICE CHUN

We’re kicking off our At-Home Facial Series with my favorite secret for amping up a detoxifying mud mask and leaving your skin polished and glowing! I’ve been doing it for years and there’s nothing like it! So when you don’t have time or the room in your budget to visit your facialist, take your mud mask to another level by adding a product you probably already have in your bathroom cabinet. Here’s how:

TOOLS:

STEPS:

  1. Squeeze a generous amount of the mud mask onto your fingertips and rub them together.
  2. Apply all over face as demonstrated on Alyssa above. Wait 15 minutes or until it dries completely.
  3. Now don’t rinse yet! Squeeze a generous amount of the scrub onto your fingertips and rub together.
  4. Apply the scrub directly on top of the dried mask and start rubbing it in circles as you move across your facial area. This does two things: it breaks down the mask but more importantly, it helps remove dead skin cells while your pores are already cleaned.
  5. Now rinse by splashing with cool water. You can use a wet wash cloth or muslin cloth as well.

Your skin will feel incredibly soft and smooth like you just had microdermabrasion! If you have sensitive skin, test this process on a small area to make sure it’s not too irritating.

SKIN PERFECTION

POST + PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY NADINE, GRAPHIC DESIGN BY EUNICE CHUN

As amazing as Summer is, it can be pretty damaging to our skin, even if you wear SPF 50, sit under an umbrella with sunglasses and a hat on! Freckles multiply (welcome to my life!), sun spots get darker, melasma spreads and an accidental afternoon with no sun protection leaves you with a sunburn followed by peeling. So today I’m asking you to make a plan to undo it all! There are short term solutions (perfect if you have a date tonight!) that surfacely shed the dead skin and plump, making your skin gorgeous and renewed, and there are long term solutions that actually lighten and brighten the dark spots. These are my tippy-top three favorites:  (more…)

HOW TO EXFOLIATE FOR SKIN RENEWAL

Tutorial + Photography by Amy Nadine, Graphic Design by Eunice Chun

I can’t believe I went thirty years without knowing the right way to exfoliate my face! Sure, my old method wasn’t a total waste, but a huge difference than doing it right. Now I do this method every other day and my skin is as soft and refined as a baby’s. Combine it with a proper skincare regimen and you’ll train your skin to constantly renew itself and build collagen. Here’s all you need to know:  (more…)
