I’ve received so many questions about how I created How to Get Away With Murder’s Karla Souza‘s bright red lip stain on Saturday night that I had to recreate it again for you! When I send my girls out on a red carpet followed by a party, I try to send them with the lipstick in their clutch, but I feel more at ease when I know I did this triple threat method. Because it will. not. move! Period. So this is exactly what I did for Karla, then I went out to dinner with my friends and never worried about it for a second (which took years and a lot of practice for me to get that confident!).

TOOLS:

LIP LINER:

  1. Line the upper lip perimeter with the lip pencil.
  2. Line the bottom lip perimeter.
  3. Fill in the entire lip area.

LONGWEAR LIPSTICK:

  1. Go over the lip area with the longwear lipstick. This one is ultra-moisturizing for a longwear formula and won’t move.

LIQUID LIP STAIN:

  1. Lastly, go over the lip liner and longwear lipstick with the liquid lip stain. Wait a minute before you drink or kiss anyone!

Yes you can do just one of the three products, or two of them, but if you do all three, you will drive home that night and when you go to wash your face, your lips should look as great as they did when you left for the party!

HOW TO PREVENT LIPSTICK ON YOUR TEETH

I was at lunch last week with my girlfriends and was in shock that they didn’t know this trick! I thought everyone’s grandmother taught them it! So let me be your grandmother today LOL and teach you one of the greatest tips out there that you’ll use for the rest of your life. Nothing is worse than rocking a gorgeous bold lip then walking into the bathroom and seeing it all over your teeth! AGH! So annoying. If you choose a matte formula, most likely this won’t happen; but choose a bright satin finish or a liquid lacquer and you’re in trouble. Luckily there’s a little quick thing you can do (and should do) every time you wear lipstick. Simply place your index finger in your mouth, close your lips around it then pull the finger back out. Any lipstick that would have ended up on your teeth is now on your finger instead. I test every lipstick with this trick before I leave the house and maybe a third of the time there is nothing on my finger. The rest of the time, my finger is looks like Magali’s above.

TOOLS:

STEPS:

  1. Apply the lipstick along the top, really coating while following the shape of the cupid’s bow.
  2. Apply it along the bottom as well, being sure to coat the inside part so you don’t have bare lip peeking through. This is the area that tends to end up on your teeth, but not an area you want to skip when wearing a bright lip color. Which is why this finger trick is a life saver!
  3. Place your finger in your mouth and wrap your lips around it. I tried to take a picture of this step to show you but, let’s just say it doesn’t photograph well! Then pull your finger out and all of the lipstick that would have ended up on your teeth is now on your finger.

LIP SMACKING

Most guys that I’ve talked to say they hate when their girlfriends arrive on a date wearing red lipstick. Not that they don’t think we look pretty in it, but that they’ve had bad experiences with it ending up on their lips too! Or their collars! Luckily, lip stains have come a long way. These give head-turning color payoff unlike a conventional stain and absolutely will not budge. Let them dry for a few minutes then kiss a tissue and see there’s not a mark on it. Brilliant! Here’s how:

TOOLS:

STEPS:

  1. Apply the stain all over the lip area. Work within the perimeter as it’s easier to go back and fill that part in with the brush as opposed to going back and erasing a stain that has gone outside of the line with a q-tip.
  2. Go back and perfect the edges by dipping the brush against the stain that is already on your lip area and tracing the outline.
  3. If there is a gloss that comes with the stain, apply it once the stain is completely dry.
