BODY MOISTURIZING MUST

Aren’t you tired of battling dryness every single winter? Then spending Spring trying to undo it? It’s not your fault; between having the heat on at home, in the car, space heaters under our desks… our skin doesn’t stand a chance. Until now! I learned this trick from a yoga instructor in New Mexico over the holidays; you know, one of those women who looks twenty years younger than her age. I was so embarrassed when she walked over to check my form and my legs were so scaly no matter how much lotion I piled on. I had to say something and she nonchalantly told me to always apply body oil before showering instead of after. At first it sounded bizarre but she was totally right! One of the most drying things that we do to ourselves is taking a hot shower. The outer layer of our skin (the epidermis) is made up of keratin and oil to protect the keratin. The hot water temperature softens the oil layer until it melts and washes away. Yes, switching to a moisturizing body wash is a definite must. But in the winter we tend to take not only hotter showers but longer ones too and a moisturizing body wash isn’t enough to keep your skin from getting dry. I’m sure you’re already using a moisturizing body wash but still noticing how much drier your skin is in the winter time. So try this technique like our model Alyssa above and let us know if it works for you too! (more…)

A BLANK CANVAS

For some of us, melasma and hyperpigmentation are a part of life and every now and then we have an important occasion that calls for full coverage. But that doesn’t mean we have to go out and buy a full coverage foundation (it’s not good to wear that much coverage on a daily basis anyway). Just make your own with concealer and face lotion! I personally think it gives better coverage than the “full coverage” foundations that are out there. Again, please don’t do this every day, as I don’t know how sensitive your skin is to breakouts, even though this shouldn’t cause a breakout as concealers are formulated to also cover blemishes. So just save it for an emergency situation where you find out you’re going to be on television or have your picture taken for something important! Here’s how: (more…)

RADIANT COMPLEXION

If you ask any of my clients, they’ll tell you this is exactly what I swear by for happy, beautiful skin. Of course I share it with them for their benefit, but selfishly it’s also to make my makeup even more gorgeous! Because as a makeup artist, I’m only as good as my canvas and the more radiant and smooth the skin is, the more evenly the makeup goes on (and the less I have to use!). So here are my favorite skin savers to get you through the summer: (more…)

THE HIGHLIGHTER

There are many ways to use luminizing lotions, but this is my favorite. It draws all the attention the eyes using a simple optical trick that you probably learned back in art class: if you want to pull something forward, make it lighter and if you want to push something back, make it darker. Why not pull the whole eye area forward and highlight it at the same time with a little luminizing shimmer? Here’s how: (more…)
