Your boyfriend says he likes you better without makeup… you’re meeting your friends to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity… you’re headed to a study group with class mates… all occasions when you don’t want to look like you’re trying too hard! But the problem is you’re not used to seeing yourself without a lot of makeup on and somehow you’ve forgotten that you’re pretty without it. Don’t fret! I get it. I swear my eyes look beady and washed out without eyeliner. But I love the look of just mascara, especially when I want to look effortless, have all the attention go to my lashes or paired with a bright lip. So this is where tightlining comes in. It’s the sister technique to rimming your bottom waterline, but this time you are pressing a gel liner into your upper lashline from directly below it for the ultimate definition, like I had the pleasure of doing on each of the red carpet looks above for Emmy Rossum, Kate Bosworth, Mia Wasikowska and Brittany Snow. EDGE PERFECTION

Another oldie but goodie, this trick is your best friend for many reasons… it creates a sharp line, it has a lifting effect and it takes the pressure off you to even worry about applying it perfectly. And all you need is a baby wipe. Sold! Here’s how:

  1. Before you apply foundation, start with a smoky eye. Hold the wipe from the side of your nose to the end of the brow. 99% of the time, this is the perfect angle for lifting and winging your shadow. If your eyebrow is on the shorter side, use the angle of the outside corner of your lower lashline to determine where you place the wipe.
  2. Place your finger on the wipe directly to the side of the eyeshadow as seen above.
  3. In one quick swoop, pull the wipe by dragging your finger from your bottom lashline to your brow.
  4. Remove the wipe and you’ll see a perfect + clean edge!
  5. Perfect the top corner by slightly rounding it out with a Q-tip.

You can end it there. Or… for even more drama, go back with a black kajal liner like the Physician’s Formula Shimmer Liner that I used on Sophia above (or a black liquid liner) and draw an exaggerated winged line using the edge as your guide.

WHITE LINER: THE ULTIMATE PRIMER

I created this post to show you how impactful applying white eyeliner to your lid is before matte shadows to really make the shadow color come to life. Shadow primers are great too, but nowhere near as powerful as a white kohl pencil. Because honestly, matte shadows need a little help going on without become blotchy or faded; and it’s always a little disappointing to buy a shadow that’s bright and pigmented in its packaging but goes on more sheer and waah waah. This method is also an amazing way to make a DIY gorgeous matte colored liner if you don’t want to fill in the whole lid. Investing in a white pencil gives you countless options for creating your own brighter lids and even making your own lipstick shades (coming next week!). Here’s how: (more…)

OH HEY BIG EYES!

For something so simple, a pop of color along the underlid makes quite an impact. For demonstration purposes I’m showing the how to on my fellow blogger Taye Hansberry’s normal-sized eyes (check out her fashion blog here!), but this is especially great for those of us with monolids or smaller eyes.
