While it can be totally satisfying to splurge on that new cult-fave hair PRODUCT or CURLING WAND you’ve been coveting, I’m also big on the thrill of adding gorgeous and versatile hair accessories to my growing collection. They provide a level of instant gratification that products and tools sometimes can’t…like great jewelry, a chic hair clip or interesting accessory can instantly elevate an otherwise simple look. With ongoing summer temps being of the relentless persuasion (what? I can’t hear you over the squirt bottle/fan combo I’m waving around my face like its my job.), we’ve pulled together a well-rounded list of perfect accessories to help you chill. Links below the photos.

1. SAFETY PIN CLIP  I’d wear a paper clip too if it was dipped in gold. It’s just SUH cute!

2. OVERSIZED BARRETTE This classic barrette must have chowed the “eat me” cake (Alice & Wonderland fans?). Mini things are adorable, but giant versions are just plain useful. Also how is this only $4?!

3. TORTOISESHELL CHIGNON STICK  I always have one of these in my bag – it’s way chicer than a pencil holding up a chignon when you’re burning the midnight oil.

4. GOLD LEAF CLUSTER HEADBAND Such a perfect bridesmaid hair accessory! Anyone can throw this in and make simple waves or a loose updo something major!

5. GOLD HEART CLIP Never met a shape clip I didn’t like. Bonus points if you can create a braided updo this interesting before adding it in!

6. HANDMADE GOLD HAIRPIN Have nothing for your hair that you do not know to be beautiful, or believe to be useful.

7. TURQUOISE AND BRASS BARRETTE This statement piece is so gorgeous and unique – use it with THIS trick to pony-up thick locks in the prettiest of ways.

8. THIN GOLD BAR HAIR CLIP Dramatic, yet simple – use this thin clip to hold back a few key pieces in any half-up scenario.

9. INFINITY HAIR CLIP For my finer-haired girls, this little gem is small and light-weight, so it can add a little pizazz to your maine without weighing it down.

10. SILK PONY BRAIDER When you find your creative vibes are flowing, make the prettiest braid ever with this soft pink silk woven through it.

11. CRYSTAL LEAF HEADBAND This is special enough to grace the locks of a late summer/early fall bride! It has just the right amount of sparkle, and the asymmetry keeps things interesting.

12. GOLD OUTLINE HAIR CLIP Simple and sleek – this barrette will keep your locks off your neck without drawing too much attention away from a very on-trend off-the-shoulder number.

….And the best part is, no one will notice your back sweat when you make gorgeous hair the focal point. Am I right?!

Which one is your favorite? Let us know in the comments below!

While your lob/bob is super cute and chic, there are still days you may envy the girls who can effortlessly throw in a top knot and go about their business. Usually those are the days you want to crash at the local “Cooling Center” because the temps hit record high. So while recently cruising the air conditioned aisles of H&M, I was thrilled to find THIS versatile and easily-workable clip, that is as attractive as it is helpful in a short hair updo. We worked two looks with this clip, but no doubt you could create many more. Here is one for our BOB girls and one for ladies who LOB:

While this first look (up top) seems slightly complex, it really breaks down to being a simple three-step process. We first worked some texture into the hair with THIS iron and THIS technique, which helps the clip to grip better and hides potential frizz from the heat and humidity. Then we pulled the hair from the top of the head and crown back into a bun just above the occipital bone (the bone in the back of your head that sticks out slightly), and tied it into a bun with a HAIRBAND. Then we repeated the previous step with the hair left underneath. Any hair that doesn’t reach (in this case, the hair above the ears) can be twisted back in between the two buns, then slip the clip in horizontally to hold those pieces and anchor the overall look. You’re done! Treat yourself to an iced coffee.

For our second look, utilizing the textured waves from the previous style, we pulled a small bit of hair back from above the ears in a slight twist, then slipped the clip in horizontally. Voilà!

We want to see your creativity! If you recreate the looks from above, or invent your own way to use this clip, tag us on IG @thebeautydept.

Clutch the pearls, girls!! As you may know, we’re always on the hunt for new hair accessories. We live for a good trend but we also get down with the stand-alone classic! (Remember THIS ONE!?) Pearls are clearly a classic but we’re finding that they’re having a big moment right now and wanted share some of our current faves!

  1. THE PEARL PONY. Dresses up a simple outfit in a classic way.
  2. DOUBLE STRAND PEARL/STAR HEADBAND. So gorgeous. You could definitely see this on a maid-of-honor.
  3. PEARL VINE HEADBAND. And then of course, this on a bride!
  4. PEARL BOBBYPINS (ASSORTED SIZES). Love this set of four! So great for placing randomly in a chignon or braid.
  5. TINY LEAF COMBS. Dresses up a messy bun in under two minutes! I know these aren’t pearl but they made it into the accessory report anyway! So dainty.
  6. SINLGE PEARL FRENCH PIN. This is my FAVORITE of all of these. So simple and extremely chic.
  7. PEARL TRIO. (PS, this set is on saaaaale!)
  8. BRANCH BOBBIES. These would be amazing for an outdoor winter wedding!

Do I even need to post a whole story about why this barrette is my new jam for Fall? No. But I will. It’s so versatile as you can clearly see in this post and also– it’s EIIIIIGHT DOLLLLLARS. What? We’ve managed to do half up, messy bun, ponytail, and a side swept half up look so far. I’m sure there are lots of other ways to use this and I’m sure you’ll be seeing them here soon. You could absolutely wear this anywhere. You could pair it with a dress or with jeans and a simple tee.

Here’s how you’d style the look up top:

  • curl the hair using the curling iron linked at the bottom of this post.
  • pull the hair half up.
  • give it a light twist and insert the barrette.

The steps for this one are:

  • create a messy bun.
  • spread out the hair using your fingers.
  • add a couple bobbypins to secure the bun.
  • run the clip across the middle and secure.

The ponytail is very simple.

  • wave as desired or air dry.
  • gather all the hair in a low ponytail.
  • secure the barrette near the nape of the neck.

I was fascinated to learn that this clip is versatile enough to hold all of our models hair or just a tiny section. There’s a spring inside that allows you to use this on pretty much any hair type.

For the side swept look:

  • brush out the hair to soften the waves.
  • use your comb to make a deep side part.
  • smooth a piece over to the opposite side and secure the clip.

It’s crazy how it stayed in place with just this tiny section of hair.

  • THE DAY + NIGHT HAIR CLIP (get it quick, I bet they’ll go fast. I got two so I could carry one in my purse.) UPDATE: this clip has been sold out, but you can find similar ones HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE.
  • THE CURLING IRON (I love these irons for major hold!! even those who say their hair doesn’t hold!)
  • GOLD BRUSH (I mean, you probably don’t need a gold brush but it’s good to know this exists)
  • BLACK COMB (get a good comb that won’t melt or break on you!)

(OH! And while we’re all caught up in this beauty bizz, let’s not overlook this ridiculously cute DRESS)
