Hot roller favorites

photo by kristin ess, post by norah curlee

Blame it on Mad Men if you will, but hot rollers are making a comeback! There’s a reason why the women of yesteryear could always be spotted sporting a full set of these in salons everywhere. Curling your hair with an iron takes time, giving yourself a blow out can be difficult and labor intensive, but rollers take just minutes and free up your hands to move on with your beauty routine! You can eat breakfast, curl your lashes and freshen up your mani all while these hotties are doing the grunt work for you. Perfectly styled hair with minimal effort. Genius.

With so many different options available, there is a set out there for everyone, and naturally…we have a few favorites. Lets roll…

1. We love these jumbo rollers by John Frieda for creating larger curls/waves and they heat up in only 2 minutes!

2. This set from Conair has 2x the flocking for better heat protection and a smoother curl.

3. We love that this set has cool end rings…not burning your hands is always a good thing!

4. This option from T3 is a bit of a splurge but comes with two different sizes and it’s ion levels help retain moisture to fight frizz.

5. Revlon offers a 20 piece set with 3 various sizes to mix it up!

6. These by Remington have heated clips that add additional heat transfer for a longer lasting curl. Smart!

7. For the girls with hair for days! These by Babyliss tally in at 30 rollers…that should do it!

8. We love the temperature settings on this Conair set.

9. This 5-roller set from Conair is perfect for travel with its compact case!

If you are someone who is pressed for time or just can’t be bothered to juggle a curling wand or round brush then hair rollers may just be your knight in shining armor. Are you already a roller girl? We want to know your holy grail set in the comments below!

Favorite bobby pins!

POST/GRAPHIC DESIGN BY NORAH CURLEE

Bobby pins are miniature saviors when it comes to perfecting up-dos, holding flyways in place and pinning back bangs, but they have come a long way!  Today, we are showing the accessory side of this favorite hair necessity. We’ve combed through the hair archives and found some of our most favorite pins that add just a little something to this summer’s tousled waves or lazy fun bun. It’s a tiny addition with a big statement. A total win/pin!

1.  Birds of a feather…and its gold! *swoon*

2.  You can never go wrong with a little neon.

3.  The very busy bee.

4.  Cutest little donut. Ever.

5.  Made with real dried flowers!

6.  Complete with tiny locket! (Do you think a picture of Ryan Gosling would fit?)

7.  For the mermaid in all of us.

8.  These make a statement…literally!

9.  They really are super fun, yeah!

10. Pretty printed pins.

11. We heart these.

12. Not so heavy metal.

So many cute pins to choose from and we predict a few of these will make it onto our locks all summer long. Have you come across any amazing hair pins that we just have to see? Share the love! Show us on Twitter: @tbdofficial or Instagram: @thebeautydept

SPRING HAIR TREND DIY

PHOTOS: KRISTIN ESS

We love a good DIY, and we particularly love a DIY that includes flowers. Saw one of these floral ribbons at a retail store the other day. It was way too overpriced for my liking so of course we decided to create a version you can make yourself for about $2. It’s a simple thin ribbon with flowers and a bobby pin attached– not rocket science, but sometimes simple is just prettier. You know we love a flower crown but we’re head over heels for this as a new alternative. Here’s how we made it…

You’ll want to find tiny flowers so the weight doesn’t pull the ribbon. We opted for these 3 types but you can use anything small and lightweight. Two of these were free because they were from my garden and then we purchased one stem of rice flowers from a local flower shop.

  1. Collect scissors, 1/8″ thin ribbon, your flowers, a single small bobby pin and some thin beading wire.
  2. Gather a tiny cluster of buds and bind them together using a small piece of your wire. Be sure to tuck the ends of the wire in so they don’t get stuck in your hair.
  3. You’ll want to wrap a few clusters. 5-6 is plenty.
  4. Cut 1 yard of ribbon for short to medium hair and 1 1/2 yards for longer hair.
  5. Tie an extra small bobby pin (they make ones that are shorter than the normal size but if you don’t have that you can use the regular ones.
  6. Last, attach your flower clusters. We spaced each one out a little differently. Just make sure you put an even weight on each side so the ribbon doesn’t slide over to the heavier side.

Use the bobby pin to secure the ribbon just below your part. This will be such a great look for anyone who plans on hitting Coachella or any music festival for that matter! If you make one and wear it, don’t forget to tag us @thebeautydept on instagram! We would love to see yours.

ALL HAIR, ALL WEEK

Calling all curly girls! Here’s a fun, fancy little updo for you. We get lots of requests for updos on curly hair from our readers who want to embrace their natural texture. Working with curls when doing an updo is so much fun because almost anything you do looks romantic + girly! This tutorial is pretty easy and you can accessorize it with anything you want. Here we added a necklace from J. Crew  (incorporating jewelry into the hair is always SO much fun!) but you can add flowers, a headband, or just leave it plain + simple! If you don’t have curly hair and you want this look, you can always spend some time and curl your entire head with 5/8″ or 3/4″ barrell iron and then follow along! Let’s do it…  (more…)
