FOUNDATION BRUSH MASTER CLASS

POST + PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY NADINE, GRAPHIC DESIGN BY EUNICE CHUN

Did you know that the brush that you choose to apply foundation with has a major effect on the coverage? You can take the same foundation, apply it with three different brushes and get three completely different results. When I work on my clients’ faces, I consider many things… is the event in the daytime with natural light or nighttime with flash bulbs, is it indoors with icky cafeteria lighting or outdoors with direct sunlight? Do they have sun damage or redness that needs extra coverage? The answers to these questions determine the foundation and the foundation brush to use. Here’s a quick guide!  (more…)

MAKEUP FOR ACNE PRONE SKIN

POST + PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY NADINE, GRAPHIC DESIGN BY EUNICE CHUN

There’s nothing worse than doing an acne treatment regime only to undo it with the wrong makeup. Through the years, I’ve learned to be very sensitive with my clients’ skin. I used to think “oh I just do their makeup on the red carpet a couple times a month, it can’t do any damage!” but then I remembered that these lovely girls get their makeup done at 5am five times a week for their TV shows and their skin is going through the ringer and I should be more cautious! So these have become our favorites to keep their skin clear and gorgeous. Some of these products made it into my kit through trial and error while others were demanded by my clients who know that they work and won’t take any chances! Hope they help you too. Please share your favorites in the comments below as well! (more…)

UNDER-EYE CORRECTION

One of the most reoccurring emails in our inbox is about covering dark circles. We’ve done two tutorials addressing it so far (revisit How to Cover Dark Circles and Daytime Concealer Trick for more), but today we’re tackling the darkest of dark circles with the help of the color correction! I know I refer to art class a lot, but makeup is an art form and the same theories apply. On the color wheel, orange and blue are across from each other and yellow and purple are across from each other, which means they cancel each other out. So if you have serious dark circles, they’re probably a little purple and a little blueish. Luckily, we know the best concealers that are the perfect shades of orange and yellow to cancel them out. Or if yours are pretty bad but not fatal, try a salmon (pinky-peach) shade to brighten at the same time. My fellow makeup artist Sophia Flores breaks it down (and kindly loans us her eye above): (more…)

BEAUTY BASICS: FOUNDATION BLENDING

Post & Photography by Amy Nadine, Graphic Design by Eunice Chun

We get so many emails asking if it’s worth it to buy an egg-shaped sponge and my answer is always a resounding YES! There’s something gorgeous that happens when you apply your foundation it… it gives sheer but buildable coverage and best of all, is much faster than a foundation brush. And the pointed tip fits perfectly in the hard to reach areas around the nose and eyes. My favorites are the Sonia Kashuk Egg Sponge and Urban Outfitter’s The Finished Edge Sponge because they’re indented for your more control with your fingers and of course the original Beauty Blender for a lightness in density that is unmatched.

Most importantly, there are a few rules that I swear by to do it right (I can’t tell you how many times I see people using them wrong) so pay close attention! (more…)
