BODY MOISTURIZING MUST

Aren’t you tired of battling dryness every single winter? Then spending Spring trying to undo it? It’s not your fault; between having the heat on at home, in the car, space heaters under our desks… our skin doesn’t stand a chance. Until now! I learned this trick from a yoga instructor in New Mexico over the holidays; you know, one of those women who looks twenty years younger than her age. I was so embarrassed when she walked over to check my form and my legs were so scaly no matter how much lotion I piled on. I had to say something and she nonchalantly told me to always apply body oil before showering instead of after. At first it sounded bizarre but she was totally right! One of the most drying things that we do to ourselves is taking a hot shower. The outer layer of our skin (the epidermis) is made up of keratin and oil to protect the keratin. The hot water temperature softens the oil layer until it melts and washes away. Yes, switching to a moisturizing body wash is a definite must. But in the winter we tend to take not only hotter showers but longer ones too and a moisturizing body wash isn’t enough to keep your skin from getting dry. I’m sure you’re already using a moisturizing body wash but still noticing how much drier your skin is in the winter time. As amazing as Summer is, it can be pretty damaging to our skin, even if you wear SPF 50, sit under an umbrella with sunglasses and a hat on! Freckles multiply (welcome to my life!), sun spots get darker, melasma spreads and an accidental afternoon with no sun protection leaves you with a sunburn followed by peeling. So today I’m asking you to make a plan to undo it all! There are short term solutions (perfect if you have a date tonight!) that surfacely shed the dead skin and plump, making your skin gorgeous and renewed, and there are long term solutions that actually lighten and brighten the dark spots. HOMEMADE BODY SHIMMER

Temperatures are rising and prom, formals + weddings are just around the corner! Which means our skin needs a little help after a long dry winter! After giving your body a good buff with our D.I.Y. brown sugar scrub, add a little shimmer to your lotion to get that perfect glow (without having to spend any money!). Here’s what I made last week in 3 easy steps to use on my clients on talk shows (Brittany Snow with her gorgeous new red hair on her visit to Conan, stunning + raven-haired Krysten Ritter on her visits to both Jimmy Kimmel and Conan and our lovely Lauren Conrad on her visit to Chelsea Lately last night!) that I thought you might like too:

TOOLS

Your favorite lotion (we’re obsessed with Korres Body Butter in Jasmine because it’s natural and smells divine but any lotion that you love will work)
Small jar of gold loose mica mineral pigment (I like Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Loose Colour Concentrate in Clove for Fair to Medium skin tones, or Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics in Acacia or Mimosa for Tan to Dark skin tones). You can also crush up an old gold or pearl pressed eyeshadow to make it loose.
A mixing bowl or tumbler, chopstick + spoon
An empty travel-sized jar or bottle

1. Combine 4 parts lotion with ½ teaspoon gold shimmer (or measure by sprinkling the shimmer until desired shade is achieved).
2. Stir with chopstick until color is consistent (isn’t it gorgeous?!) then direct it towards one side for scooping.
3. Spoon out your creation and transfer it into the jar.

You can do this with coconut oil, tanning oils and many sunscreens. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll start wanting to try different shades of illuminating loose powders and add them to everything! Please share any of your ideas + potions too!

For those of you who get to travel home this weekend, there are some things we think you should pack to stay comfy + cozy that will also help battle dryness (aka: heaters, dehydrating altitude from airplanes and ski slopes, and for some of you, the drying effects of too much wine or bubbly!).
