BEAUTY BASICS

POST + PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY NADINE, GRAPHIC DESIGN BY EUNICE CHUN

We’re going back to the basics, ladies! And all you need is a classic kohl pencil. Because you can actually create a full smoky eye by smearing and blending your liner up and out. That’s it! You can do it with any color, as long as it’s a classic kohl pencil and not a longwear waterproof one. I love it because it gives your lid more of a “watercolor” finish that you can’t get with eyeshadow. Here’s how:

TOOLS:

  • Kohl Pencil — Almost every brand offers a kohl version, and most offer it in many colors! I used Lancôme‘s Le Crayon KOHL Smoky Eyeliner above because it’s really intense but you can blend and smear it as much or as little as you like.
  • Blending Brush — I used Hourglass Domed Shadow Brush because of its short and dense bristles.
  • Smudge Brush — I used Cozzette’s Mini Definer Brush #D230 because it’s my favorite to smudge the lower lash line.
  • Mascara
  • Setting Powder — You can use the same powder you set your face makeup with, just make sure it’s translucent.

STEPS:

  1. Line your upper lashline from the inner corner to the outer corner.
  2. Draw another line directly above that one.
  3. Keep drawing lines above each other until you reach the crease.
  4. Blend back and forth with the blending brush over the area you’ve filled in. You can also use your finger, but it’s a little messier!
  5. Work the same brush past the area you filled in, up into and above the crease as well as out past the eye area but not past the distance of where the brow ends, obviously.
  6. Trace the lower lashline with the same kohl pencil.
  7. Smudge the line back and forth with the smudge brush using short strokes to really work it into the lashline.
  8. Go back over the upper lashline with the kohl pencil by drawing a line from the inner corner to the outer corner.
  9. Finish with a couple coats of mascara.
  10. Set it with a quick dusting of translucent setting powder.

Pair it with a pinky-nude cheek and lip and everyone will ask, who is that mysterious siren hiding behind those bangs! Speaking of which, our model today is our lovely friend Lacy and if you love vintage fashion, check out her store www.whynaughtshop.com!
