CURRENT OBSESSION: BUN CUFFS

bun cuff accessory summer hair the beauty department

Intuition tells me you throw your hair into a top knot occasionally, no? I get it: in less time than it takes to slip on ‘dem sweats, you can whisk imperfect strands into a quick bun that keeps them out of sight/out of mind. But what if you want to ditch the sweats and head out for an impromptu girls night? Give your curling iron a rest and pick up our new favorite accessory: lé bun cuff! This fast-growing micro trend is a dreamy way to elevate your basic bun with minimal effort for maximum effect. We’ve rounded up a list of our current favorites, and there are so many options!

Also, don’t feel limited to working these with a simple ballerina bun – some of these would look great with a FUN BUN, HALF-UP top knot, or a LOW BUN too. You’ll have an easier time if you create your look first with a hair band, then add your favorite cuff. (Click the pic to shop that style)

BEST CURLING WANDS

ROUNDUP + POST: KRISTIN ESS

ROUNDUP + POST: KRISTIN ESS

Lots and lots of wand questions lately, both online and in person. Many people ask the same two questions: A) should I get a wand? And if so, B) which wand? We’re here to sort that. We’ve talked about wands and used them in tons of tutorials. (OMG remember when we did the “5 WAYS TO WAND” post?) I personally think everyone should have one no matter how long, short, thick, thin, curly or straight your hair is. Below is a list of 11 wands (and one glove). Find the one that works with your hair/lifestyle and click the link to get the goods. Here we go…

  1. ENZO MILANO 1″ CURLING WAND. This one is in my kit always. It’s one of my two go-to wands (the other is number 9!) because I feel like it’s the most well-rounded and I’ve had success using it on pretty much all hair types. It works quickly and I don’t feel like I have to go over the hair multiple times. This is particularly great news for those of you with super thick or coarse hair who feel like wanding takes alllllllll day.
  2. SEPHORA 1″ CURLING WAND. The only major difference between this one and the one I mentioned above is this one has a smoother feel. Some people prefer a shiny metal barrel to a matte metal barrel because of the way the hair slides on and off the wand. Small difference but big to some.
  3. KISS 1/2″ CURLING WAND. I am obsesssssssed with tiny curling wands. They make it so easy to refine any unruly curls while letting naturally curly hair just be. This is a must-have for my curly girls who don’t have time to re-wet and wait. If you’re running late and one little section went rogue from sleeping, you can do a quick 5 min touch up to pull it all together. Great for a curly girl on the go!
  4. T3 INTER-CHANGEABLE WAND.  This new wand is pretty amazing. I find that this one actually helps with frizz– as in after you wave, then mess it up, it doesn’t get frizzy. It’s a heavy duty professional tool. I wouldn’t put this in the hands of someone with no experience. I’d say this is more for a beauty blogger or professional hairstylist. It’s weighty and your arms might get tired when using it on yourself, but it sure is bad ass.
  5. BABYLISS CONICAL WAND (MADE FOR THE UK). My UK girls! Hiiiiiii! I take this wand when I travel for work. I love it and wish they made the same one for the US. This one heats up quickly and evenly, and it’s sleek and black and très chic.
  6. SALLY BEAUTY CURLING IRON WITH REMOVABLE CLIP. This is a pretty cool tool for someone who uses both  the curling iron and a wand but doesn’t want to have both irons taking up space. Good for the Marie Kondo fans (props to anyone who gets that reference!)
  7. CHI CHANGEABLE WAND SET. This one’s for the girl with the ever-changing looks! If you like to experiment with your hairstyles, you’ll want to play with different sized barrels. This one comes with 3 wand sizes so you don’t have to commit to just one. It’s a little more pricey but worth it to not buy 3 separate irons, right?
  8. HOT TOOLS CLIPLESS CURLING IRON. As we know, I’m a diehard Hot Tools fan through and through. This is one of my favorites to have around because it’s the same size as the curling iron I use the most, which is the 1 1/4″, this just comes without the clamp. The feel of this wand is so similar to the feel of my Hot Tools curling irons so it’s just comfortable and easy to use. It also comes with the safety tip at the end so you don’t burn yourself.
  9. TIGI BED HEAD SPLIT PERSONALITY WAND. I’ve used this on TBD many times. (this is the one from the “5 WAYS TO WAND” post, they just changed the handle). The whole Tigi Bed Head wand collection is my jam because it curls and holds even in super-fine and super straight hair that doesn’t like to stay curled.
  10. TIGI BED HEAD 1″ CONICAL WAND. This is almost the exact same as number 9 but it has the safety tip in case you have a habit of grabbing the end of a curling iron.
  11. TIGI BED HEAD 1″ STRAIGHT WAND. This one is very similar as well but has a straight barrel instead of the conical shape (aka: tapered shape). Love it because, again, it curls even the finest/straightest hair that doesn’t like to be curled. It also has the safety tip which is good for new wand users.
  12. HEAT RESISTANT GLOVE. Speaking of new wand users… DON’T forget your glove! If you haven’t got a ton of wand experience, or if you’re thinking about switching from a curling iron to a wand for the first time, buy one of these IF your wand doesn’t come with it or if you’ve lost your original one! Most wands do come with a glove, but just in case, here’s a link.

Who here has ever used a wand? Incorporated a wand to their routine? Switched from a curling iron to a wand completely? Would love to hear your experiences and the differences you find between curling and wanding. Most people tell me it’s easier for them to use a wand. Thoughts?

FAVORITE TYPES OF FLAT IRONS

Kristin Ess

There are about a gazillion flat irons on the market. Every time I go to a beauty supply I’m baffled at the number of flat irons with crazy features that have been introduced in the last few years. Today, I thought we would go over the only four flat irons that you could ever possibly need (no matter what your budget). We’ve also been asked about our must-have irons in regards to THIS post.

  1. The Beveled Iron: GHD – This has quickly become one of my favorite flat irons. The reason is, I use it to get those gorgeous, natural, beachy looking flat iron waves. It has a curved edge which is how I get those subtle dips and bends without it looking like I used a curling iron. This might replace the curling iron for me… at least for the whole summer.  (Link to my favorite one HERE)
  2. The Slickest: Croc –  This is my go to flat iron for really straightening hair. No matter what your natural texture is, it gives you the shiniest, smoothest, silkiest finish. I also use this for keratin treatments because it glides through so easily. (Link to my favorite one HERE)
  3. The Cheapest: Remington Pearl – In my opinion, this is one of the best flatirons on the market for someone on a budget. You don’t typically see this kind of shiny finish to the hair with a less expensive iron. Even though it’s budget friendly, it definitely competes with some of the more expensive irons out there. (Link to my favorite one HERE)
  4. The Tiniest:  Conair Mini – I love this for girls on the go. It’s so tiny and great for touch-ups after work before a hot date because it fits perfectly in your purse. Also great for anyone with bangs that need straightening, as larger irons can make that task a bit more difficult. (Link to my favorite one HERE)

So now that you know our favorites, it’s only fair that we know yours! Any specific brands/models that we just have to know about? We want details! Leave us a comment below!

ON THE LIST

  1. GOLD FEATHER HAIR CLIP – Lately we’ve been so into the half up/half down do’s and this gorgeous gold feather gives us even more of a reason to keep that obsession going. Also, here is a much less expensive DIY version made from gold leather!
  2. LEATHER LIPS MAKEUP POUCH – Can you actually have too many makeup pouches? The answer is no.
  3. ORIBE MOUSSES – Just when you think Oribe products couldn’t be any more perfect, this happens. He recently launched 3 new mousses— one is volumizing, one is for enhancing natural curls and one is for beachy hair. Anything Oribe says about beach hair we will listen to as you may know we’re obsessed with his Apres Beach spray.
  4. AMERICAN APPAREL SHEER POLISHES – Look at this gorgeousness of these sheer polishes. These have been around for a while, but we’re really obsessed with the layering technique as we fade from summer to fall.
  5. HARRY JOSH BLOWDRYER – One of the things that bothers me the most about blowdryers is how “utilitarian” they look in your sparkly bathroom. Not only is this dryer equipped to dry your hair 60% faster than other dryers, but it’s CUTE as a button with it’s matte mint exterior and handmade. It’s an investment but it seems like it will stand the test of time. Save your dollars for this gem.
  6. GHD PRETTY PASTEL FLAT IRON – Speaking of pretty pastel hair tools, GHD has created a new batch (limited edition) of my favorite flat iron inspired by retro candy shoppe colors. I love my black one for the salon and my kit but if I were going to get one for my bathroom at home I’d definitely grab this one.
  7. COLLECTION OF EYELINERS – Sometimes Sephora just gets it! In this box, they’ve compliled their most popular eyeliners. This is a dream gift for anyone who wants to learn the classic cat eye or anyone on a mission to figure out which liner is best for a smoky eye. They’ve put every option in this box and it couldn’t be cooler (or cheaper at $30!!)
  8. NAIL DECALS – If you’re bored with the intricate painting of nail art, no sweat! Try these cute little nail decals by Sara M. Lyons! She’s on Etsy and creates wayyyy too many fun decals to count.
  9. BUNNY MIRROR – Just a sucker for a white rabbit.
