My favorite lip trend of the year so far on the runways, style blogs and red carpets is (of course) the deep mahogany lip. It’s also called a wine lip (or cabernet or burgundy) or a vamp lip. But this one is a little less purple-based and a little more brown/red based. Anyway, I have yet to find a skin tone that it doesn’t look gorgeous on! Typically it’s paired with a more simple eye (as not to compete with it), but I wanted to show on my friend Charlene that you can pair it with a smoky eye as well. Here’s how to rock it yourself:

TOOLS:

STEPS:

  1. I assume it’s a given that you’ll prep with a moisturizing lip balm, but just in case, this is not the time to forget! So apply it, work on the rest of your face while it penetrates then lightly blot it off. Next grab the lip pencil and line the perimeter of the lip area.
  2. Continue by filling in the entire lip area with the lip pencil.
  3. Now apply the lipstick directly on top thickly. Press hard to really coat it. If you want to make it last longer, blot it with a tissue and add one more coat.

I’m not sure if you follow my career but I had the pleasure of creating this lip on Krysten Ritter (aka Jessica Jones!) last month at the Costumer Designers’ Guild Awards and used this matte version in Glastonbury ($$).

FOR THE WINE LOVERS

This Winter, we’re obsessed with this bold lip trend, so much so that we’ve found three different ways to wear it! It looks gorgeous on all skin tones, even the palest of the pale, which is why we asked our fair friend Lexie to model it for us. Here’s everything you need to know about rocking a deep berry wine lip:

OPTION 1: A PLUMPING GLOSSThis one is beautiful in the daytime, or for those of you with chapped lips, thinner lips or lip lines, because it forgives all sins instead of making them look worse!

OPTION 2: A LIQUID LACQUERThis option (in Seduction) is pretty on everyone! It has the intensity of a lipstick but the shiny-ness of a gloss. It feels ultra-luxurious to wear.

OPTION 3: A MATTE STAINThis one (in Wicked) is for the extremists who love making a statement and turning heads! If you have excessive lip lines or thinner lips, it might not be the right choice, otherwise you’ll love it.

Pair it with a light eye shadow (like  a gold metallic) to complement but not compete!

FALL FASHION LIP TRANSLATION

You’d have to be living under a rock to miss this Oxblood fashion trend! Ok just kidding but seriously it’s been everywhere from handbags, jeans and heels to translated as a lip statement on the runways, the Emmy’s and the VMA’s. And the only way to do it is with a longwear lip lacquer. Why? Because there is nothing worse than having a deep red statement lip smearing and traveling past your lips. (Vampires are still in fashion but let’s not take the blood-drinking look too literally please!) So here’s how to get it done right, with a splurge and a save option for each: (more…)

FALL FASHION LIP TRANSLATION

You can translate this huge Fall trend in a small way, or really go for it! You can play with different formulas too… burgundy lipstick, lip gloss, stains, matte balms or liners paired with gold powder eye shadow, cream shadow or gold metallic lipstick. Makeup is supposed to be fun and a creative outlet, so choose by your mood that day or what you have in your makeup drawer! Here’s how we did it: (more…)
