A FINE FRENCHY

As many of you already know, Alison Sudol (AKA: A Fine Frenzy) is an incredibly talented musician with the voice of a SPARROW ANGEL! My favorite songbird beauty just released a new single from her upcoming album “Pines” called “Now is the Start”. It’s such a fun, happy song! Click here + listen! The photoshoot for this album was such a blast and was shot by our good friends Angela+Ithyle. Ali and I wanted to do something timeless with her hair– something that wouldn’t distract from all the pretty lights, stripes, and um- giant SAILBOAT!! Sometimes when there are a lot of fun things happening in a photo (or even with your outfit) you just want to keep it classic + simple, right? So that’s what we did. Luckily, our darling Alison was kind enought to pop by TBD and show us how to recreate this textured french twist on herself using a secret little tool… chopsticks. Here we go!

BEST NAIL POLISH SHADES

photos: Jen Gotch, post Kristin Ess

Seasons in between seasons are often the best. Pre-fall is great because you get a chance to mix the brightness of summer with the moody trend tones of fall. Today we’re showing you the majority of the colors we’ll be using in our upcoming mani tutorials. We always like to give you a lil preview so you can stock up and get your nail art kit ready to go. A couple of them might be a little hard to find, depending on where you are, but you can always get something similar at your local beauty supply…

BALLERINA BUN (REMIX)

Photos by http://www.angelaandithyle.com Post design by Kristin Ess

Hello lovelies! Today we’re showing you how to create a hybrid of our two favorite things– a bun and a braid. Certainly you’ve racked up some mileage on Ballerina Bun Airlines. Perhaps you’re bored and want to put a new twist on  things…? This is the perfect way to keep it simple + fresh. This could be amazing for those mornings you’re rushing to work, or you can pop in a sparkly bow where the bun and braid meet for an adorable holiday party updo! Quick, pretty and polished. Who doesn’t love that?

TOOLS: water based pomade, 2 clear elastic ponytail holders, a comb or teasing brush, bobby pins.

  1. Flip your head over and put a little bit of pomade at the root. I like to do this because it makes the hair easier to braid by giving a little bit of soft/flexible hold. Braids are less likely to slip out when you use this.
  2. With your head still flipped, braid from the base of your neck going up to the crown area. Stop where you want the bun to start.
  3. When you reach your stopping point with the braid, tie the 3 braid pieces off with a clear elastic.
  4. You should still be upside down at this point. Now gather all of your hair into a high ponytail. Flip right-side-up and make sure it’s centered, then tie it off with your other clear elastic.
  5. Tease the hair with a comb or a teasing brush.
  6. Pin it into a classic bun shape. If you need help with this last step, click here. You could also top this off with the “Fun Bun” if you’d rather. (Last but never least, a light veil of hairspray is optional!)
