UNDER COVER

POST: KRISTIN ESS

Some days I wonder if there’s anyone out there who’s more pale and more sensitive-skinned than moi. I take cover the instant the sun comes out because I start to sunburn within minutes. So– I’ll forever be the girl in all black sipping a margarita under an umbrella while everyone else is out surfing or trying to recreate the opening scene of Baywatch. In addition to my obnoxiously flowy, billowy caftan collection, I lightly hoard hats. Whether you have sensitive skin or not, it’s important to have some hat options for your days in the soleil! Here are some current faves…

WET HAIR STYLES

Lately we’ve been getting tons of request for wash and go hairstyles and I’m not user why considering it’s winter in many parts of the country. But let’s DO it! Apparently a lot of you leave the house or the gym with wet hair so we’re going to do a hairstyle that you can let air dry that will look better and better throughout the day. If you’re going to wash and go, all you really need are two things– a good SPRAY LEAVE IN CONDITIONER and a great GEL SERUM (that one is my favorite but if you would like a less expensive alternative, Loreal makes this GEL SERUM). Gel serums are meant for air drying or blowdrying into the hair. I discovered this stuff while working in the salon. I needed something for those who wanted to forego the blow-dry (i know, crazy right!?) so I started using it then. It’s pretty cool. It has the texture of a gel but doesn’t get “crunchy” because of the serum addition. It stays soft and adds light hold and good volume.

Start by spraying in a light layer of your leave-in conditioner and combing out any tangles.  Next add a dime or quarter sized dollop of gel serum to the palm of your hands and emulsify it in your hands. Spread it throughout the hair evenly. I put this all the way from roots to ends and then brush through because I like to know that it’s distributed evenly throughout the hair.

Now add two regular braids going from the sides to the back of your head. Cross them over each other in back and pin them together using large bobby pins. You always want to secure wet hair a little more because it tends to slip a little.

Now twist small sections throughout the back. This will keep frizz to a minimum and will create separation in your waves. The gel serum will help minimize frizz as well. Scrunch the hair a little before walking out the door and let the rest of it air dry.

Remember, you’re not going to get curling iron waves, so don’t expect this to look like that. This is a wash and go hairstyle using your natural waves or curls. If you have straight hair, this will still work.

These wash and go styles are ideal for anyone with damage needing a break from blowdrying and curling, anyone rushing out the door with no time for styling or even you beach bunnies down in Australia enjoying the summer right now!

HOLIDAY HAIR ACCESSORY IDEAS

TOP + BOTTOM PHOTOS/POST: KRISTIN ESS

You know we’ve always loved a good gold accessory around here, or any metallic hair jewel for that matter. But today we’re seeing stars! Something about these stellar headbands, clips, combs and charms take us to our holiday happy place and we think you’re going to love them, too. It’s a good idea to have one or two of these sparklers in your purse up til NYE just in case a seasonal soiree pops up unexpectedly. Let your hair down and pair one of gems with an LBD like we did on my little sis in the top and bottom photos! Here are my current faves…

AIR DRYING FOR BETTER CURLS

We’ve been very into 90’s vibes as of late with all these short blunt cutshair flips. Another look that pairs well with a major flip is big volumious curl. We love air dried hair and think it’s gorgeous just the way it is, but did you know that air drying can be nearly as beneficial as a styling product? Let me explain! When you blow your hair out before you curl, you pull your natural wave pattern out with heat. That means you’ve relayed the message to your hair, the cuticle and root that you want it straight. Even if you go in with hairspray and a curling iron or wand, the likelihood is that your curl is going to want to return to the state in which you blowdried it.

If you have wavy or curly hair and you allow your hair to air dry before you curl (no matter how big, frizzy, kinky, janky or funky you may think it looks) you allow the pattern to come through and that pattern provides so much curl support. More than most products, in my opinion.

WASHING: In the top photo, we prepped the hair by shampooing with a curl enhancing shampoo + conditioner. (I’ll add budget friendly options below!) You’ll want to comb your hair out in the shower when you’re rinsing your conditioner through and then avoid brushing it out once you’re out of the shower, other than parting it if you need to. Doing so will help your wave pattern look more defined. Towel dry only.

DRYING: All that was added before going to sleep was a small amount of curl enhancing serum. Literally woke up like this.

THE WAND: The reason the wand is good for this is because unlike the classic curling iron, the hair doesn’t get pressed from both sides, in other words, it’s not smashed between two hot plates. Translation: wand curls will almost always be fuller, bouncier and more voluminous than curling iron curls. THIS WAND that we used can be found here and it’s our lucky day because it’s on sale. HOORAY! The hair was wrapped back and away from the face all over the head. We applied absolutely zero product to the hair as we curled and zero product after.

If you’re looking for an alternative curl enhancing system that’s budget friendly, definitely try THIS + THIS + THIS which can be found at many drugstores! We’ve tried this before, and although we aren’t major fans of the scent, the product works very well.

I’m very excited for those of you with wave and curl to try this out. Learn to use what you’ve got naturally to your benefit. Sure, adding curling iron or wand curls defeats the purpose of air drying, but we’re not saying air dried hair is bad. We’re saying if you want stronger, longer lasting curls, use your own for extra support! If you have any curl support tips, please share them with other readers in the comments below. Xx
