SHORT STACK

photos/post KRISTIN ESS

With so many of you pretty people sporting shorter hair right now, it seems like the only thing growing is our short hair style request list here in the TBD office. Today we’re doing a fairly simple look geared specifically toward the bob. You can do this with or without bangs and the best thing is, the actual half-updo requires no heat tools (other than styling your hair in the morning, or air dry if you prefer) so it can be done after work on the way to a holiday party or a hawt date. Add some sparkle in the back if you’re going to a wedding.

Short Hair Half Up via thebeautydepartment

  1.  You’ll want to dry your hair with a bit of texture. In otherwords, air dry if you have natural wave or add some wave if you don’t. Light wand waves or flat iron waves will do the trick. If you have curly hair, you may want to blow it out to get this particular look but you should also try doing it curly as well! Add a little texture spray of choice. Here in photo 1, we broke out THIS SPRAY! It gives a soft beachy feel.
  2. Now tease your crown area lightly.
  3. Add a little of THIS TEXTURE POWDER (which is on sale right now, btw!). This helps the tease stay in place without having to backcomb too aggressively. Lightly sprinkle some powder into the crown and tap it into the light back combing.
  4. Pinch both sides together in back of the head. Twist them over once and then secure with a bobby pin. The texture powder will also help the bobbypins stay in place and not slide out.
  5. Go in with a TAIL COMB and pull up a little as you see in photo 5 for a little extra height.
  6. Tilt your head foreward and give the back a little veil of hairspray. We used THIS ONE but you can use whatever you’ve got! It’s just for a tiny bit of extra hold.
  7. Now, I like to go into the crown area (to the side of and above the bobby pins) and put my fingers into the hair tousseling up the texture just a little bit. Nothing crazy. It just makes it appear a bit more lived in. This is fully optional and you can leave it smooth if you prefer!
  8. Check the back in a hand mirror to make sure it feels balanced. Then check from the side as well to see that it looks good with your profile.

You can see that Caitlyn has bangs, but again, this can be done without bangs. Just choose which side you want to part on before getting started. Here’s a pretty shot of it with a comb from our friend MYRA CALLAN of Twigs + Honey.

BEAUTY BITES

If we could wish for more of anything, ENERGY would be at the very top of the list. Let’s face it, beauties…we live in a super busy world where time seems to vanish quicker than it came and life can get exhausting! Lately in the TBD kitchen, we’ve been whipping up anything and everything that can give as a healthy energy boost to power through even the busiest day. Not to mention, with summer officially at the close, we are craving ALL of the fall flavors. So with the serious need for a kick in the pants and a fall flavor craving, we’ve come up with the easiest little energy bites! These are perfect for on the go and packed full of warm fall spice…and a few beauty benefits worth mentioning!

Like many of our recipes, you can bet that the ingredients are minimal and the process is simple. But rest assure, simple does not mean basic in this case! We’ve jazzed up these energy bites into our three favorite flavor profiles for fall. Pumpkin pie (obvi), maple pecan, and spiced chai. So let’s get into these three delicious recipes, shall we?

PUMPKIN PIE ENERGY BITES

What you’ll need:

1 cup of oats

1 tablespoon of sunflower seeds

1/2 cup of ground flax meal

1/3 cup of honey

1/2 cup almond butter

1/3 cup chopped almonds

2 teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice (plus extra for sprinkling)

The Process:

Put all of your ingredients into a large bowl and mix until combined (they have a thick cookie dough like consistancy). Roll into balls and dust with extra pumpkin pie spice. You know, for that extra deliciousness. These taste straight up like a slice of the good stuff. Is it Thanksgiving yet?

MAPLE PECAN ENERGY BITES

What you’ll need:

1 cup oats

1/3 cup chopped pecans (plus extra to roll them in)

1/2 cup ground flax meal

1/3 cup pure maple syrup (use the good stuff, not the place for Aunt Jemima!)

1/2 cup almond butter

1 teaspoon cinnamon

The Process:

Place all the ingredients into a large bowl and mix until combined. Roll into balls and then roll in leftover chopped pecans. This is an optional step but they look so pretty…almost like truffles. Super healthy truffles that is. Not to mention these taste like pancakes. PANCAKES.

CHAI SPICE ENERGY BITES

What you’ll need:

1 cup oats

1/3 cup toasted coconut

1/3 cup honey

1/2 cup ground flax meal

1/2 cup almond butter

2 teaspoons of chai spice (we made our own but you can find this in the spice aisle)

chopped slivered almonds (to roll them in)

The Process:

You know the drill…everything goes into the bowl and start mixing! We rolled these in chopped slivered almonds and it went perfect with the spicy chai flavor. These literally taste like a chai latte!

These bites may be small, but they pack a big punch. Between the oats, the flax meal and almond butter they contain plenty of fiber, omega 3s and healthy carbs to keep the motor running! More energy = more active. More active = a healthier lifestyle. A healthy, active body inside is the best way to reflect a healthy body on the outside. What you put into it, is what you get out of it! Beauty wise, the almond butter in these “treats” is a great source of vitamin E that can help protect your cells from oxidative stress. This is HUGELY beneficial for the skin. Good skin and energy to burn…two of our favorite things!

We hope that the next time you’re running on empty, you give our yummy fall flavored energy bites a try! Wether it’s after a workout, mid-day at the office or when you just need a pick-me-up, these little babies will do the trick. They also taste like dessert, so everybody wins!

Beauty Bites

One might think the words “avocado” and “pudding” don’t belong in the same sentence, but we are here to tell you otherwise! Sounds weird right? Who would have thought this guacamole staple could be sweetened and whipped up with a few ingredients to create smoothest most decadent chocolate pudding ever. We can’t get enough avocado around TBD, obviously. We love it on toast, in salads, and even as the most amazing hair mask of all time. While this may be the most unusual way we’ve ever used this fruit (and yes it is a fruit), it’s definitely the most delicious! We can’t wait for you guys to try out this recipe and even more so for the beauty benefits.

This dreamy chocolate pudding is another one of our “throw everything in a blender and you’re done”  recipes. Quick, easy, and delicious. Unlike traditional chocolate pudding that is loaded with sugar and lots of cream, our version contains only avocado, unsweetened cocoa powder, coconut milk, honey, vanilla and cinnamon. We love making these types of desserts at home because we can control the quality of the ingredients and we know exactly what is going onto our plate!

This is what you’ll need: (yields 2 servings)

  • 2 ripe, peeled and pitted avocados
  • 1/3 cup coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • dash of cinnamon

The Process:

Toss everything into a blender or food processor and blend until completely smooth. Chill in the refrigerator until you’re ready to chow. (If you aren’t eating it straight out of the blender by now). Couldn’t be easier!

For extra fun (and even more beauty benefits) we topped our chocolate pudding with some non-dairy whipped coconut cream and a sprinkle of bright pink pomegranate seeds. You know, for the gorgeous effect. You can also add things like sliced banana, berries, pistachios and any other of your favorites.

Our pal, the avocado, is good for you in so many ways. They have more fat than any other fruit, but don’t let that stop you from slicing one up quite yet! This is the good kind of fat that is great for heart health, blood pressure, skin and hair vitality and countless others. Yes, you read that right. It’s full of a fat that makes your body healthy. Be still our beating hearts. These monounsaturated fats in avocado are so beneficial in improving your skin tone. They are vital for maintaining good moisture levels in the epidermal layer of your skin that make it look and feel soft and healthy. We are always looking for ways to incorporate this feel good food into our diet…we’re thrilled that this time it’s coming in the form of creamy chocolate pudding. (YES)

We’re all about eats with a big nutrient roster AND an indulgent taste. Go ahead and file this recipe right into the NON-guilty pleasures category. While you’re at it, go ahead and add it to your “good enough to serve to company” list, too. Your friends will flip, and we’re willing to bet they’ll never guess that this pudding is packed full of avocado goodness.

We hope you try out this amazing, healthy chocolate pudding and that you prepare yourselves to be blown away. It really is that good, especially for all of you chocoholics out there! Enjoy!
