HOW TO USE A BROW BRUSH

POST & PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY NADINE, GRAPHIC DESIGN BY EUNICE CHUN

We get a lot of emails asking how to use brushes correctly so I hope this helps you out a little! A brow brush is designed to be stiff and angled for a reason. And we use the slanted edge to shade and the tip of the edge to outline. Put those components together and a brow brush is quite frankly a thing of perfection! Here’s how to use it properly:  (more…)

SPRING HAIR TREND DIY

We love a good DIY, and we particularly love a DIY that includes flowers. Saw one of these floral ribbons at a retail store the other day. It was way too overpriced for my liking so of course we decided to create a version you can make yourself for about $2. It’s a simple thin ribbon with flowers and a bobby pin attached– not rocket science, but sometimes simple is just prettier. You know we love a flower crown but we’re head over heels for this as a new alternative. Here’s how we made it…

You’ll want to find tiny flowers so the weight doesn’t pull the ribbon. We opted for these 3 types but you can use anything small and lightweight. Two of these were free because they were from my garden and then we purchased one stem of rice flowers from a local flower shop.

  1. Collect scissors, 1/8″ thin ribbon, your flowers, a single small bobby pin and some thin beading wire.
  2. Gather a tiny cluster of buds and bind them together using a small piece of your wire. Be sure to tuck the ends of the wire in so they don’t get stuck in your hair.
  3. You’ll want to wrap a few clusters. 5-6 is plenty.
  4. Cut 1 yard of ribbon for short to medium hair and 1 1/2 yards for longer hair.
  5. Tie an extra small bobby pin (they make ones that are shorter than the normal size but if you don’t have that you can use the regular ones.
  6. Last, attach your flower clusters. We spaced each one out a little differently. Just make sure you put an even weight on each side so the ribbon doesn’t slide over to the heavier side.

Use the bobby pin to secure the ribbon just below your part. This will be such a great look for anyone who plans on hitting Coachella or any music festival for that matter! If you make one and wear it, don’t forget to tag us @thebeautydept on instagram! We would love to see yours.

INDIGO GIRL

Last week we explored four different ways to wear Spring’s biggest Cobalt blue trend. For those of you that don’t feel up to wearing something so bright, we have a darker and slightly more wearable version for you today! But it still has major wow factor and brings all of the attention to your eyes. I can’t beg you enough to try it. When I describe it to my clients and friends, most are like eh. But when they let me try it on them, they die! I’m not sure why navy blue seems so scary or  not of interest but it’s such an amazing color on the eyes! On brown eyes the most, but on blue, hazel and green too. You just gotta try it for me. Then tag us on Instagram so I can see it! Here’s how:  (more…)

KITCHEN BEAUTICIAN

This method has been around for centuries! It’s a powerful Ayuveda technique that removes bacteria from your mouth, gums and teeth and whitens your teeth without using bleach. This is what happened to me this month: my sister told me I had to do it every morning because she read it helps with fertility (my hubby and I have been trying for three years, so I pretty much try anything now!). I did it every morning and after just a couple days noticed my teeth looked whiter but didn’t think much of it. Then two weeks later I went to the dentist for my biannual checkup and was ready to get a big lecture. My dentist was half way through the cleaning when he asked “you floss twice a day, right?” I said “I wish, I’ve been really bad about it lately and am lucky if I do it once a week.” He said my gums were so healthy, didn’t bleed at all and there was barely any tartar. He continued with his cleaning then said “you bleach your teeth, right?” To which I also told him no. He said my teeth were so white that when I walked in the room he thought I had gotten veneers! I finally told him I’ve been oil pulling. He had never heard of it but said my mouth, gums and teeth were extremely healthy and he was going to look into it. I was so excited that I actually got a good report card that I’ve been telling all of my friends and now my readers! I’ve since learned it can also clear up acne and your sinuses, prevent gingivitis and promotes heart health! Here’s your Oil Pulling 101: (more…)
