I’ve received so many questions about how I created How to Get Away With Murder’s Karla Souza‘s bright red lip stain on Saturday night that I had to recreate it again for you! When I send my girls out on a red carpet followed by a party, I try to send them with the lipstick in their clutch, but I feel more at ease when I know I did this triple threat method. Because it will. not. move! Period. So this is exactly what I did for Karla, then I went out to dinner with my friends and never worried about it for a second (which took years and a lot of practice for me to get that confident!).

TOOLS:

LIP LINER:

  1. Line the upper lip perimeter with the lip pencil.
  2. Line the bottom lip perimeter.
  3. Fill in the entire lip area.

LONGWEAR LIPSTICK:

  1. Go over the lip area with the longwear lipstick. This one is ultra-moisturizing for a longwear formula and won’t move.

LIQUID LIP STAIN:

  1. Lastly, go over the lip liner and longwear lipstick with the liquid lip stain. Wait a minute before you drink or kiss anyone!

Yes you can do just one of the three products, or two of them, but if you do all three, you will drive home that night and when you go to wash your face, your lips should look as great as they did when you left for the party!

HOW TO PREVENT LIPSTICK ON YOUR TEETH

I was at lunch last week with my girlfriends and was in shock that they didn’t know this trick! I thought everyone’s grandmother taught them it! So let me be your grandmother today LOL and teach you one of the greatest tips out there that you’ll use for the rest of your life. Nothing is worse than rocking a gorgeous bold lip then walking into the bathroom and seeing it all over your teeth! AGH! So annoying. If you choose a matte formula, most likely this won’t happen; but choose a bright satin finish or a liquid lacquer and you’re in trouble. Luckily there’s a little quick thing you can do (and should do) every time you wear lipstick. Simply place your index finger in your mouth, close your lips around it then pull the finger back out. Any lipstick that would have ended up on your teeth is now on your finger instead. I test every lipstick with this trick before I leave the house and maybe a third of the time there is nothing on my finger. The rest of the time, my finger is looks like Magali’s above.

TOOLS:

STEPS:

  1. Apply the lipstick along the top, really coating while following the shape of the cupid’s bow.
  2. Apply it along the bottom as well, being sure to coat the inside part so you don’t have bare lip peeking through. This is the area that tends to end up on your teeth, but not an area you want to skip when wearing a bright lip color. Which is why this finger trick is a life saver!
  3. Place your finger in your mouth and wrap your lips around it. I tried to take a picture of this step to show you but, let’s just say it doesn’t photograph well! Then pull your finger out and all of the lipstick that would have ended up on your teeth is now on your finger.

HOW TO WEAR BRIGHT LIPSTICK ON THINNER LIPS

A lot of us who aren’t endowed with big plump lips are intimidated by bright lipstick, fearing it will only make our lips look smaller. But there is a little subtle trick we can do to make them look a little plumper. Because any time we highlight something, we make it appear “raised” out. So never rock a red lip without doing this ever again! Here’s how:

TOOLS:

  • Your Favorite Concealer — After all the years in this industry trying everything on everyone, I have narrowed it down three favorite concealer sticks in three different price ranges: this one ($$$), this one ($$) and this one ($).
  • Your Favorite Bright Lipstick — I used this matte lip pencil above and for the fuller lip shot I used this high pigment lip pencil. As you can see, the NARS one is more matte than the Bite Beauty one and I personally like the little hint of shine.
  • An EyeShadow Buffing Brush — Of course the brush I used in this tutorial has just been discontinued (how uncouth!) but try this shading brush instead.

STEPS:

  1. Dab the buffing brush across the top of the concealer stick to load it up.
  2. Start at an outer corner and sweep the brush along the perimeter of the lip area towards the cupid’s bow.
  3. Continue sweeping the brush from the cupid’s bow to the other corner.
  4. Repeat on the bottom lip perimeter.
  5. Now buff it in along the top lip perimeter.
  6. And continue buffing it in along the bottom lip perimeter.
  7. Finish by filling in the lip area with the bright lip color like you usually would!

SUMMER LIP… LIGHT

TUTORIAL + PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY NADINE, GRAPHIC DESIGN BY EUNICE CHUN

Yes we love buying new lipsticks every season, but there’s no real reason to in the Summer if you try this quick trick! Just sheer out your dark and rich Winter lipsticks, converting them into lighter version of themselves! I included a side-by-side of Lexie above to show you how it looks on its own then how it looks when you sheer it out. It’s nothing groundbreaking and you might have already figured it out on your own… but it’s a good one! Here’s how:  (more…)
