Here’s the deal. If you only have dark circles, you can apply a concealer that is a half shade lighter than your foundation to the under-eye area and be good to go. But… if you have dark circles and puffy “bags,” you’re actually making things look worse!

Remember back in Art class: One of the first things we studied was dimensions and we learned that if you shade something with a darker color, it will “push” it to the background, like it’s further away. On the contrary, if you paint with a lighter shade, it “pulls” that area to the foreground, making it appear closer. We can apply that theory here!

Here’s the trick: Under-eye shadows need a lighter shade to bring them forward. Puffy bags are already in the foreground and need to be pushed back, which is why you want a slightly darker shade. A lighter shade will bring them even more forward, making them look puffier! That’s the last thing you need!

STEPS:

  1. After applying foundation all over the face and neck, look in the mirror and focus your eye to only see the dark area. This is not the puffy area! This is the area that is darker and most likely closest to your nose or under the puffy “bag”. Trace the correcting pen over the dark area to lighten it up.
  2. Now notice only the part that is puffy and raised. Apply the liquid concealer in the slightly darker shade directly on top of it.
  3. Blend with your finger by tapping it instead of smearing it.
  4. Continue tapping as you move across.

NEW MOMS: NO SLEEP QUICK FIX

This tutorial is for all of us who’ve had to pull an all-nighter, especially our readers who are mothers barely getting any sleep with new babies! There are mornings when we look in the mirror and think to ourselves “who is that?!” From dark circles and bags under our eyes to puffy faces and dry cracked lips… we feel like we need a miracle yet we don’t have much time to dedicate to it. Luckily, cosmetic companies have made these lovely  weapons to erase the damage and help us feel like ourselves again!

TOOLS:

  • Eye Gel Pads — Masqueology Revitalizing Eye Masks are the best I’ve found for de-puffing under-eye bags.
  • Electric Lip Scrubber — If you’re obsessed with smooth, healthy-looking lips, you have to invest in the Bliss Fabulips Pout-O-Matic Lip Perfecting System. I use it on all of my clients and am so grateful it exists!
  • Tinted Moisturizer/Foundation/BB Cream — I used MAKE UP FOR EVER Face & Body Liquid Makeup because it’s thin enough to not feel like you’re wearing anything or look like you’re wearing makeup but still gives good coverage (and waterproof). If you’re on the hunt for a new foundation, you’ll love this one. Or you can use your favorite tinted moisturizer or BB cream.
  • Egg-shaped Sponge — As you can see by three years of my makeup tutorials, you know I’m obsessed with the Beauty Blender sponge. Make sure to dampen it with water first so it grows substantially then squeeze out the excess water with a towel.
  • Concealer — I used Hourglass Hidden Corrective Concealer because it’s lightweight but long-lasting, so you can build your coverage and not worry about it creasing.
  • Highlighter — I used Revlon Photoready Skinlights Face Illuminator because I fell in love with it in 2001 when the J-Lo glow was
  • Cream Blush — A staple in my kit, I used Stila Convertible Color cream blush.
  • Lash Curler — I used my favorite MAC Lash Curler because I’ve found it gives the strongest pinch yet is still wide enough to accommodate all eye widths.
  • Volumizing Mascara — Right now my lastest mascara obsession is Mally Beauty Volumizing Mascara because it really separates each lash while building fullness.
  • Lip Stain — I love Yves Saint Laurent Glossy Stain Rebel Nudes because they stay glossy and really stain your lip.

STEPS:

  1. Start by placing an eye gel pad under each eye. This will dramatically decrease any puffiness and “bags”.
  2. Grab the electric lip scrubber and move it back and forth in circular motions all over  the upper and lower lip area. If you don’t have an electric scrubber, grab a disposable mascara wand and lip balm and scrub in circular motions. Both techniques will bring life, circulation and color back to the lips!
  3. Do a quick once-over of tinted moisturizer/foundation/BB cream and a dampened sponge. For a refresher on how to use a makeup sponge, click here.
  4. Tackle the undereye dark circles with the concealer.
  5. Highlight the eye area by tapping the highlighter just above each cheekbone. This step does wonders to wake up the face so don’t skip it!
  6. Smile in the mirror and stipple the cream blush on the top half of the apples with the blush brush. Continue along the cheekbone and dab the tiny remainder on the brush above the brows. (Revisit the Blush Balancer Tutorial to see why).
  7. Wake up the eyes even more with a pinch of the lash curler. Don’t forget to invert it while your pinching it!
  8. Add a couple coats of volumizing mascara to define the lashes.
  9. Finish with the lip stain so you don’t have to think about it for hours!

There aren’t many (non-surgical) options for really bad undereye bags… but there are a few things we can do take the puffiness down so we’re a little less self-conscious! Some of the more obvious remedies are to get as much sleep as you can, drink lots of water throughout the day and lower or limit (eek!) your salt intake. Experts say to lower your caffeine intake as well because it can be bloating. But if you have a life and like to enjoy it, try this quick fix using milk! Why milk? Because the lactic acid in milk assists in lowering puffiness and even helps with dark circles.  (more…)

EYE CREAM SECRET

If you have puffy bags under your eyes, where you applied your eye cream might be the culprit! Here’s the deal… eye cream warms up with your body temperature and travels as it seeps into your skin. So if you apply it directly on top of your crow’s feet along your lashlines, it will travel into your eyes and irritate them, causing them to swell and give you extra unwanted baggage.

The good news is, because eye cream travels, just apply it 1/2 inch or so above your upper lashline and below your lower lashline, then while you’re sleeping, it will travel on its own and stop right around your crow’s feet, where you wanted it in the first place! Be sure to use your ring finger to apply it (it’s your weakest finger so you won’t pull too hard) and after making the dots, gently pat them in.
