We use an shadow primer to make our eyeshadow show up more, we prime our faces under foundation, so why don’t we prime our lips when we want our lipstick to really pop? Some of us have barely any pigmentation in our lips, making every lipstick look almost the same as it does in the tube. But many of us have a lot of pigmentation in our lips, making the lipstick look completely different on then it looks on the back of our hands or in the tube. That’s where a primer comes in! Before primers, we used to just go over our lip area with foundation. But foundation isn’t formulated for the lips and these primers are. Here’s how:

  • Cargo HD Picture Perfect Lip Primer — This one really extends the life of your lipstick while conditioning the lips.
  • Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar Primer — This one is super conditioning and 100% vegan but doesn’t combat pigmentation. I just wanted to include it for the girls who don’t have to worry about pigmentation but want to prep their lips with the most moisturizing primer out there.
  • Stila Lush Lips Water Plumping Primer — I love this one because not only does it neutralize pigmentation, it leaves a conditioning shield that locks in moisture.
  • NYX Lip Primer — This one is awesome because it ensures the lipstick won’t “bleed” or travel outside the lip line.
  • E.L.F. Studio Lip Primer & Plumper — I love this one because one side has cinnamon to plump while the other side locks in the color so it won’t smudge and lasts longer. And the price is amazing!

  1. Apply the primer all over the lip area like you would apply a lipstick or lip gloss.
  2. Follow with your favorite bright lipstick and notice the difference!! It will be much truer to the color in the tube.

For those of you asking about the lipstick color that I used on Charlene above, it’s this one in Coachella Coral!

There’s nothing worse than doing an acne treatment regime only to undo it with the wrong makeup. Through the years, I’ve learned to be very sensitive with my clients’ skin. I used to think “oh I just do their makeup on the red carpet a couple times a month, it can’t do any damage!” but then I remembered that these lovely girls get their makeup done at 5am five times a week for their TV shows and their skin is going through the ringer and I should be more cautious! So these have become our favorites to keep their skin clear and gorgeous. Some of these products made it into my kit through trial and error while others were demanded by my clients who know that they work and won’t take any chances! Hope they help you too. Please share your favorites in the comments below as well! (more…)

This two-product wonder is critical if you want your makeup to last when the temperature rises. If you’ve surrendered to the idea that your foundation can only last a couple of hours this summer, I promise you, you’re mistaken! You just need the right primer before you apply it then you have to lock it in with a setting spray. Here’s how:  (more…)

As a make-up artist, I always joke to my clients that I’m a beautician, not a magician (even though I like to pretend I am)! But unfortunately, I can only do so much… So before I can even begin to attempt any magic, I need a hydrated surface for the make-up to become one with, not a dry/flaky/irritated canvas that the make-up is going to sit on top of. Since I can’t go home with all of you to make sure that you wash your faces every night and apply night creams, I can make sure you know about one of the best secrets in my kit: Hyaluronic Acid. Sounds a little scary with the acid part, even though there’s nothing acidic-feeling about it! It is, hands-down, the most incredible INSTANT hydration available and will become your very best friend.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is actually created in the body and can be found in almost every single cell. The molecule binds to water and lubricates the body, like oil in a car. Unfortunately though, its half-life is between 1-3 days before it is broken down and excreted. Luckily for us, there are many scientists and lab technicians who have bottled 100% HA for us to apply topically to our skin.  Best. News. Ever!!  You will die when you see how instantly your skin is hydrated. No matter what you did or didn’t do to treat your skin the night before, if you drank alcohol or caffeine, were on a 14-hour flight, etc, two drops of HA on clean skin and you’re moisturized back to as if you just left your facialist.

Now that I’ve introduced you to the ingredient, you’ll find that almost every skin care line, and even most makeup lines, offers a version of it.  100% HA is preferred and I promise you’ll find it everywhere once you ask a sales person. Apply it all over your face and neck, wait three minutes or so then apply foundation.  If you are a primer user, apply HA before the primer, waiting a few minutes for it to completely soak in. Now your skin is ready for you to create a little magic too!
