LIPSTICK LUST LIST

Every season I sift through department store counters and drug stores, looking for my new favorite lip products. I have a little problem when it comes to lipsticks… ok, my hubby calls it an obsession but hey… it’s my favorite type of makeup! Lipsticks, lip stains, liquid lipsticks, lip gloss, lip crayons… I just love them all so much! And these are my top four formulas and shades that I’ll be personally rocking and introducing to my clients this Summer:

HAPPY POPPY — I can’t tell you how many compliments you’ll get when you rock this liquid lipstick ($$) in Carina. It’s just the happiest color ever! And if you’re more of a classic lipstick kind of gal, try this lipstick ($) in Poppy.

LOVELY LILAC — Aimee is wearing this velvetine lip stain ($$) in Polly. And when I say a stain, I mean a stain! I used this formula on Emmy Rossum one night when she was singing because she told me she needed something that could touch the microphone and not move, and it didn’t! I also love this budget-friendly version ($)!

NEXT DOOR NUDE — I’m always searching for a pinky-nude that brings the drama that only a nude can bring but still has life to it. This creamy metallic one ($$) has a hinted of gold in it and is so radiant on everyone. It’s truly one of a kind and I couldn’t find a drug-store version to include (if you know of one, please mention in the comments below!).

MOODY MERLOT — Okay, I know traditionally we save dark colors for Fall and Winter, but how boring! Rules are meant to be broken and there’s something kind of rebellious and moody about rocking a dark lip out on a Summer night. I mean, why not? I love this matte lip pencil ($$) in Train Bleu that Aimee is wearing above. I’m also really loving this highly-pigmented matte lipstick ($) in Merlot.

EYE SHADOW ENLIGHTENMENT

I learned this little trick from my idol Mary Greenwell when we were on a press tour in Rome, Madrid and London (she was doing Cate Blanchett’s makeup and I was doing Geoffrey Rush’s grooming for Elizabeth The Golden Age). I love that it’s incredibly subtle but brings the lid to life with a tiny twinkle when you blink or look down. No glitter. Nothing to hit you over the head. Just a hint of frost to catch and reflect the light. Here’s how:

TOOLS:

  1. Your Favorite Eye Shadow — I used this lavender shadow quad ($$$) on Eva because the shades of purple are universally gorgeous on every skin tone but this lilac one ($) is less of an splurge!
  2. A Lighter Shadow For The Pop — pick a slightly frosted shade so it catches the light like this one in Ice ($$) or this one ($).
  3. A Slightly Darker Shadow To Wet and Use As A Liner — I used the darker purple shadow from the palette.
  4. Your Favorite Lash Curler — I know everyone loves the Shu Uemura Curler and I love it too because it’s ultra-wide, but this one has the strongest pinch I’ve ever found!
  5. Your Favorite Mascara — I used this favorite one on Eva to really separate and coat each lash.

STEPS:

  1. Sweep the lavender/lilac shade all over the lid and crease.
  2. Trace it along the bottom lashes as well.
  3. Press your finger into the frosted lighter shade and stamp it on the center of your lid. You might have to do it twice to really make it pop!
  4. Wet a liner brush and dip it in the darker shadow. Trace it along the upper lashline. You can also wing it out like I did.
  5. Pinch the lashes with the curler.
  6. Finish with a couple coats of mascara.

Heaven! And speaking of, I was lucky enough to convince the heavenly Eva Amurri Martino to model for us! You probably recognize her from Undateable, Californication and Saved, or because she looks a lot like her mom Susan Sarandon! She just launched her new lifestyle blog Happily Eva After and it will quickly become one of your favorite reads. So good!

Every season I try to create one tutorial with a pretty and simple way to reflect the season with your makeup! This Spring, bring your lids to life with this totally wearable metallic silver shadow and pair it with this happy cheek and soft coral lip pop. Here’s how:

STEPS:

  1. Wet the lid brush in water and dip it in the silver shadow to create a paste. Sweep it across the lid and crease to create a single color wash.
  2. Wet the eyeliner brush in water and dip it in the brown shadow to create a paste. Trace it along the upper lashline as demonstrated on Brooke above. You can also wing it out and up if you prefer elongating your eye.
  3. Add a couple coats of mascara.
  4. If you wear foundation/powder, now is the time to apply it. Then smile in the mirror so your apples pop out and swirl the blush on the top half of them.
  5. Finish by applying the tinted lip balm directly from the tube.

FALL MAKEUP TREND ALERT

POST + PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY NADINE, GRAPHIC DESIGN BY EUNICE CHUN

The orange lip trend is everywhere this Fall but can be a little intimidating. How do I wear it? What eye makeup do I wear it with? Blush or bronzer? Of course with makeup there are no rules and however you want to express yourself, I stand behind you! But this is how I’d do it. And maybe you’re thinking you have no interest in this trend, but I’m nonchalantly asking you (with no hard feelings either way)… what do you have to lose? You try it and if you’re not feeling it, you wipe it off and go with something else! Here’s exactly what I did on my lovely model Brook Power above. (more…)
