It happens one morning: you get up, wander into the bathroom, lean in to see the mirror more closely and there they are… crow’s feet! You swear they weren’t there yesterday?! You’ve read about them, seen them on your mom, but didn’t think they could happen to you this young! Then it hits you: they’re only going to get worse! So you vow to amp up your anti-aging routine from this day forward. And we’ll help guide you through with our new Anti-Aging Series, starting with this today’s tutorial that takes skincare to the next level.

LED (Light Emitting Diodes) Therapies have been warriors against wrinkles for over a decade now because unlike other devices and gadgets that are complete nonsense, these actually have proven results. Blue lights are used to prevent and clear up acne while red lights work on the appearance of lines and wrinkles (as well as pain therapy) and even dark spots by accelerating cellular metabolism, repairing damaged skin cells and stimulating the production of structural proteins .  But you had to make a trip to the spa every week consistently to enjoy and see the results. So you can imagine how excited I was a few years ago when brands made ones to use at home! I’ve sifted through the numerous ones out there to find these three favorites that are professional strength and really work. Spend 10 minutes in front of the TV doing this a couple times a week and watch friends out of nowhere compliment you on your skin. I kinda got addicted after that kind of feedback! Here’s how:

OUR FAVORITES:

STEPS:

  1. After washing your face, place the device directly on a problem area and turn it on.
  2. Hold it over that area (you can actually touch the skin with it) for 1-2 minutes.
  3. Move it to another area and hold it there for 1-2 minutes. Repeat until you’ve covered every area of concern. I do under my eyes, the outer sides of my eyes, my forehead, in between my eyebrows, my lips and each lower cheek.

Note: You can do this on clean, bare skin or apply your favorite serum first like my facialist does. The red lights will make the serum permeate the surface better and work more. But don’t use this device with a Vitamin A serum as the lights will actually prevent it from working.

KITCHEN BEAUTICIAN

This is one of those random suggestions that I would never believe in a million years until I tried it myself! Of course, it’s not going to plump you up like something injected into your lips by a doctor, but I promise you, your lips will swell enough to notice a difference. Why? Because the oil found in cinnamon irritates and inflames the mucous membrane, causing a rush of blood to flow to the area, causing it to swell. And for some of you, the lips will not only swell, they’ll get redder. If you pick up a lip plumping serum or gloss out there, turn it over and read the ingredients… most likely cinnamon is listed close to the top. Yes it’s only temporary and the most I’ve ever felt like it lasted on myself is a couple of hours but hey, I’ll take it! Here’s how you can make your own:

TOOLS:

STEPS:

  1. Scoop out a pea-sized amount of Egyptian Magic with the spatula.
  2. Place it in one of the mixing divots on the tray.
  3. Sprinkle the cinnamon a few times on top of it.
  4. Mix it into a paste with the spatula.
  5. Dip the lip brush into the solution and apply it all over your lip area.
  6. Wait 3-5 minutes. You’ll feel a tingling sensation as the oil in the cinnamon irritates and inflames your mucous membrane, causing it to slightly swell.
  7. Wipe the solution off with a tissue.
  8. Follow with a tinted lip balm.

If you’re not a DIY kind of gal, try Napolean Perdis Love Bite Lip Balm Passion that is on sale on this link! For those of you inquiring about the purple eye shadow that I used, it’s Ardency Inn Modster Pigment in Orchid!

THE UPTOWN LIP

A nod to the Uptown Girl, this look is very put together and polished. It’s also a gorgeous break from the matte lip, which makes it fun and exciting! The ingredients aren’t what you might expect… let’s go:

TOOLS:

STEPS:

  1. First, even everything out by applying the leftover foundation on your sponge from your face all over your lip area.
  2. Highlight just above the perimeter of the upper lip.
  3. Blend the highlight with your finger by tapping and lightly smearing it into the skin.
  4. Line the entire perimeter with the taupe pencil.
  5. Apply the plumping gloss all over with the wand.
  6. Dip your finger into the shimmer balm and stamp it in the center of your bottom lip to add even more volume.

Note: This is a really light nude lip so to keep it as chic as possible, add a hint of blush to the cheek so you don’t get washed out.

SKIN PERFECTION

POST + PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY NADINE, GRAPHIC DESIGN BY EUNICE CHUN

As amazing as Summer is, it can be pretty damaging to our skin, even if you wear SPF 50, sit under an umbrella with sunglasses and a hat on! Freckles multiply (welcome to my life!), sun spots get darker, melasma spreads and an accidental afternoon with no sun protection leaves you with a sunburn followed by peeling. So today I’m asking you to make a plan to undo it all! There are short term solutions (perfect if you have a date tonight!) that surfacely shed the dead skin and plump, making your skin gorgeous and renewed, and there are long term solutions that actually lighten and brighten the dark spots. These are my tippy-top three favorites:  (more…)
