TBD OBSESSION: JEWELMINT

photos by jewelmint, design by eunice chun, sponsored post by amy nadine

As a makeup artist designing looks for my clients, I always get my inspiration from what they’re going to wear (like we all do!). Sometimes I do the classic pairing (red dress with a red lip) and other times I like to rebel a little against the obvious (red dress with a pink/orange lip). Really it’s all about our moods that day… and the same goes with jewelry. Accessories are the perfect way to further your form of expression and can really make an outfit come alive. And jewelry is another amazing source of inspiration for your makeup and can be tied together the same way you’d match a red shoe with a red bag or clash a lace top with spiked earrings. Here are our latest four obsessions from Kate Bosworth + Cher Coulter’s Jewelmint line and how you can make a statement together with your makeup:

BRIGHT STATEMENT EARRINGS (MATCH IT): This is an occasion where you’ll want to match it with your lip color. It doesn’t have to be the same color, it just also has to be bright. Try these fun Thunderbird Earrings paired with a bright matte hot pink lipstick, then balance the lip with a soft gold shadow.

BOHEMIAN RING (CLASH IT): Yes the colors are bright but the feel is hippie and boho, so don’t match the colors but clash it instead by understating your makeup. Keep everything light + airy by swapping foundation with a tinted moisturizer and add a sweep of bronzer for a “I’ve been hanging at SXSW all day” kind of look, perfect for this Dahlia Blossom Ring.

ART DECO NECKLACE (MATCH IT): Here’s another case where I’d match the retro necklace with retro makeup for a chic + timeless look. So wing that liner and really fill in your brows for a strong look perfect with this Shanghai Eclipse Necklace.

MIXED METALS RINGS (CLASH IT): The obvious choice would be to pull the gold + silver from the Yves Rings and match it with your eyeshadow. But something about that feels a little too contrived… so leave the lids bare and highlight your lashes instead by using a natural-bristled mascara wand for a full and soft look. Then add a peachy glow directly along your cheekbones to keep everything earthy yet ethereal.

HOW TO: LAUREN’S DIP DYED PONY

photos: Kristin Ess + Lauren Conrad, post designed by Eunice Chun

Did everyone catch a glimpse of Lauren’s pink dip dyed ponytail on her Instagram last night? It was taken just before she arrived at her last stop on the Fame Game book tour at Barnes & Noble in LA. This is a really fun idea for anyone planning to wear ponytails and fishtail braids this summer because it really adds a lil pop to the mundane mane. And though it stays longer than hair chalk, it’s still only temporary! Here are the steps we took to get the look (we literally “dip dyed” it this time):

  1. Put your hair in a ponytail.
  2. We wanted a subtle gradation with the fuchsia so there was no hard line where the blonde ends and the pink begins. Using a semi-permanent pink color + warm water we created 3 different strength pinks in 3 different bowls. (We used Special FX color in Atomic Pink. Put 2 quarter sized dabs of color in each bowl. Add 1/2 a cup of warm water to one bowl, 1 cup of warm water to the second bowl and 1 1/2 cups of warm water to the third bowl.)
  3. We dipped 6″ of Lauren’s ponytail into the lightest pink and squeezed it out over the sink.
  4. Next we went 2 inches lower and dipped the bottom 4 inches in the medium pink, then squeezed it out over the sink.
  5. Last we went 2 more inches below that, dipping the last 2 inches in the darkest pink color and squeezed it out over the sink.

After we finished coloring the hair we shampooed and conditioned the whole head. Beware that this color is not permanent but will definitely stay in light hair for a long time, brunettes for less time. The lighter your hair, the more vibrant. If you’re a brunette or redhead, you would have to have your hairstylist lighten the tips prior to dip dying your ponytail. Otherwise, chalking is another great temporary option.

EARTH DAY: BEAUTY FOR A CAUSE

design by eunice chun/post by amy nadine

We here at TBD are big supporters of Earth Day on April 22nd and try to do as much as we can to leave this planet as beautiful as we found it. This year we wanted to do something special for our friends around the world who don’t have access to clean water, because every 20 seconds a child dies from a water-related disease. So we collaborated with Tarte, one of our favorite green + eco-friendly cosmetic lines, to create a limited edition collection of our favorite four products and for every kit sold, Tarte will donate 20% of the proceeds to winetowater.org. The organization helps bring clean water to 9 countries that desperately need it through building wells, filters and irrigation systems. We couldn’t be more thrilled! Each Down to Earth Kit comes in an eco-chic quilted bag and includes:

  • a full size LipSurgence™ lip tint in enchanted (the prettiest rose shade that Amy Nadine even wore on her wedding day!)
  • a gifted Amazonian clay smart mascara (will absolutely become your favorite mascara)
  • an Amazonian clay 12-hour blush in blissful (a warm peach that gives every skin tone a glowing flush)
  • multiplEYE™ lash-enhancing liquid liner (formulated with a lash-growing serum so every time you trace it along your lash line, you’re helping grow lashes!)

We can’t think of much better than treating your face to synthetic-free gorgeousness while donating to a great charity! Click here to grab your limited-edition Down To Earth Kit while supplies last and have a wonderful Earth Day!

Retails for $49.00 (a $90 value if 4 items purchased separately). 20% of proceeds donated to winetowater.org.

**Tarte has added a contest to give a kit to one lucky reader! Click here by April 15, 2012 at 11:59pm EST and good luck! CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED, and the lucky winner is…  Jackie S. from Essex Junction, VT! Congrats Jackie!

PRETTY IN PINK

photo: kristin ess/post: amy nadine

Today we’re on set shooting and I have to decide between my current favorite pinks. It’s not easy but each one has its own finish + color payoff. I’m sure you’ve noticed the last time you were at the store that there were a gazillion versions to choose from that are not your mother’s lipstick.  As your pocket makeup artist, I’ll walk you through each choice and why I like it…

THE JUST-BITTEN STAIN: This little beauty delivers a sheer stain to add color in a very fairy tale, “I have naturally bright pink lips, sorry!” kind of way. TBD Favorite: YSL Rouge Pur Couture Vernis in #14.

THE HIGH PAY-OFF TINTED BALM: This is for those of us who hate the feeling of wearing more than a lip balm, but don’t want to sacrifice color! TBD Favorite: Tarte LipSurgence in Amused.

THE INTENSE GLOSS: This is for the girl who loves a shiny glossy lip but still wants to rock a bright shade. TBD Favorite: NARS Larger Than Life Gloss in Place Vendome.

THE HIGH-PIGMENT MATTE CRAYON: This wonder stick is for the retro girl who loves the classic edge of a matte lip. TBD Favorite: Bite Beauty Matte Pencil in Grapevine.

THE DAREDEVIL MATTE GLOSS-STAIN HYBRID: This goodness-in-a-tube is like nothing you’ve ever felt before! It stains your lip for hours but in a matte finish and comes in the brightest array of colors possible. TBD Favorite: Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tars in Brights.

Which is your favorite? What drugstore brands do you find have the most pink payoff?
