MOVE IT OR LOSE IT

moving beauty storage

If you’ve packed up and moved recently you know, and if you haven’t moved recently you’ve probably blocked it from your memory: moving can be a nightmare! This month I’ve been slowly packing up my entire life and one of the most time consuming/challenging parts of my move was my beauty closet, bathroom and vanity. I thought it would be fun to share the beauty-related part of my move so that if you’re faced with this challenge in the upcoming months, you can come peep this guide for help!

I recently jumped on the Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up train, thanks to a friend of mine. Look it up if you don’t know about it! The concept is basically that you hold something in your hand and if it truly brings you joy, you keep it and if it doesn’t you toss it, donate it or give it to a friend. Since there are hundreds (maybe thousands if we’re being honest) of beauty products between my house, studio and office, that’s a lot of holding product in your hands. Instead I decided to work backwards on that method; I sat down and thought about what products TRULY bring me joy after the world’s longest day or what I won’t skip even on a manic monday morning. Things that came to mind for me:

You get the point… So once I thought of all of those things and boxed them up, I then gathered my essentials: razors, hot irons, medicine cabinet contents, lady stuff, etc… and I box that up too. One major thing I learned is that you have to pack a small kit for yourself, almost like a travel kit, to get you by for a couple days if your move is going to take some time.

MOVING TIPS BATHROOM STORAGE

Over the years, I have cultivated a massive collection of epic products so I can’t just throw those out because that would be crazy and wasteful! Here’s how I divi’d it all up…

FIRST THINGS FIRST: I check for expiration dates, major clogging that’s not fixable, dryness, product separation, scent changes, shattered palettes and broken bottles or pumps. Toss out anything that’s not quite right.

THE $$$$ ONES: For the expensive things I like to gather my gals. I call up a bunch of my friends and have a little beauty party. I let them take whatever they want because I know they’ll use it if they don’t know how, I can explain it on the spot. For the most part, I give these things to friends instead of donating because I’ve seen donations get tossed for being misunderstood. Example: I donated a very tiny jar eye cream that was around 100 dollars and the guy accepting the donations thought it was a sample and asked me if was trash. Lesson learned.

THE BRAND NEW ONES: If something is brand new and still in the box you can donate it to a local women’s shelter to be given away as a holiday gift. You can also specify that you would like it to be given to a woman who is trying to get back on her feet, feel better about herself and going out for job interviews.

OPENED BUT STILL FULL: A lot of times I will receive a great product and I’ll open it to try it but not necessarily want to keep it. I recently started donating all of those things to an AMAZING charity called The Beauty Bus. It’s the most incredible organization and they’re doing the sweetest things. I dare you to go on that website and not bawl your eyeballs out.

Beauty Bus Foundation delivers dignity, hope and respite to chronically or terminally ill men, women and children and their caregivers through beauty and grooming services and pampering products.

I also donate to my favorite women’s shelters, family programs, beauty schools, etc. Google foundations in your area and read the reviews online about their donation programs!

And last, but certainly not least is putting these things in actual boxes. I found the best was was to break everything up into categories. I used small “banker boxes” (because beauty product gets heavy AF real fast). I got them on Amazon went with these categories. Feel free to merge some if you have less of one category or break some up if you have more!

  • IN-SHOWER (makes it easier to unpack)
  • MEDICINE CABINET
  • HAIR EQUIPMENT / BRUSHES/ IRONS
  • HAIRCARE + STYLING PRODUCT
  • NAIL POLISH + MANICURE/PEDICURE
  • LIPS + LASHES
  • FOUNDATION AND CONTOUR
  • BLUSHES + EYESHADOWS
  • SKINCARE + BODYCARE
  • MISC: MASKS, TRAVEL BOTTLES, LOOFAHS, ETC

If you’re packing up this weekend or anytime soon, we hope this advise help! And here’s hoping you’re more organized when you get there than you were before you left!

ORGANIZATION STATION: BATHROOM + VANITY

NAIL POLISH ORGANIZER THE BEAUTY DEPARTMENT

When you look at your bathroom or vanity counters (or your desk for that matter) and see everything perfectly organized, don’t you feel more productive and more inspired than usual? Even if it only lasts a week or two or three! Every year, I take a quick pause during the last weeks of December to organize, take inventory and give things away from my personal stash to friends I know who would want them. It’s a nice feeling on many levels and gets me just a little more pumped about starting the new year. The last week of the year is when I like to bust out these holiday gift cards and take a trip to organization nation. Target, Amazon, Bed Bath + Beyond, and the Container Store are my personal faves for finding good organization tools– particularly for beauty! Below are 44 very helpful get your stuff together in 2015! Click the names for the links! (I couldn’t find a link to the one above but it’s from Target and it was about $14.)

countertop bathroom storage the beauty department

I love countertop pieces because you can load them up and move them. I have a vanity in my bedroom next to a big window where I like to do my makeup if I have time. But if I’m in a rush, I do it in the bathroom where I do the rest of my beauty routine. Moving it back and forth is much easier when it’s all loaded into one or two of these organizers.

Clear sliding drawers are awesome for pretty much anything. I keep the majority of my jewelry in these because I don’t like my metals to oxidize as much and I’m a lot less likely to lose pieces. Sliding drawers are also good for lipsticks because you can easily group them by shades. I also am obsessed with the one for sunglasses!

  1. SUNGLASS DRAWERS $20
  2. 3 DRAWER ORGANIZER $15
  3. CLEAR STACKING BOXES $30

If you’re working with a small space, you need every inch you can get. Grab one or two corner units to maximize on that space. Also stackers are awesome because they’re like little tiny bleachers for your bottles. As they stack up gradually, you can see labels and colors. I love to use things that were intended for the kitchen to organize my products. Always check the kitchen section!

  1. CORNER ORGANIZER $10
  2. NAIL POLISH STACKER $10

drawer and cabinet organization the beauty department

It’s just as important to organize the things you can’t see and you’re a lot less likely to lose things if they have a specific home. Here are some of my favorites for under the counter and in the drawer! I love using a lazy susan in my lower cabinets so I can just spin it versus getting down low on your knees and knocking every single product over on your mission to find that one.

  1. COTTON SWAB HOLDER $4
  2. IN-DRAWER ORGANIZERS $5

ORGANIZATION STATION!

Post/Graphic Design by Norah Curlee

So we know we’re a little late for Spring cleaning, but it’s never too late to get organized! This is especially important for your beauty stash as it can easily take over every surface. Not only does keeping your bits and bobs stored properly look really great, but knowing where everything is can cut down on time when it comes to getting ready. There’s a storage solution for every beauty product and tool under the sun and we’ve rounded them up here…pens at the ready!

JARS + CATCH-ALLS

These guys come in very handy for storing things like Q-tips, cotton rounds, hair ties, bobby pins, tweezers and scissors and so much more. Have several small odds and ends that don’t have a home? Into the jar they go!

Our faves:

1. Artisan Glass Container With Oak Lid

2. Jars With Chalk Labels

3. Square Glass Jar With Gold Lid

4. Acrylic Clear Canisters

5. Small Woodstock Tin

MAKEUP + HAIR

Probably the most important for obvious reasons. So many hair dryers and blushes and brushes…where to put them all? Here:

1. Doris Wall Cabinet – So great for tucking away that hair dryer and curling iron!

2. Diva Vanity Organizer – Makeup brushes up top and plenty of drawer space.

3. Marble Brush Holder – The chicest way to hold makeup brushes. Obsessed.

4. Acrylic Cosmetic Organizer – The perfect vanity topper with nooks and crannies for all the makeup!

CUTE CANISTERS

Just because it serves a purpose doesn’t mean it has to be boring! We love these storage canisters that are functional and pretty enough to display around your space. We’re getting them all.

1. Silver Ceramic Jar

2. Marble Swivel Top Box

3. Jonathan Adler Secrets Canister

4. Glass Apothecary Jar

5. Copper Ceramic Jar

6. White Porcelain Box

7. Striped Ceramic Jar

So what’s your beauty storage situation? Does everything have its place or is it all at random? We want to know because we’re nosy like that. Leave us a comment below!

ORGANIZATION STATION: GET YOUR HAIR STUFF IN CHIC ORDER

photos & post by Kristin Ess

If you’re a girl on the go, you’re probably familiar with the magical mystical “bathroom tornado”. It comes through scattering everything everywhere, leaving no bobbypin unturned. No one knows how it happens, but it’s a huge bummer when you return home from a long day to find this natural disaster has struck your bathroom counter once again. Luckily there’s a way to keep your hair stuff (or makeup brushes) all together in one super chic place. These holders are made from Mason jars which are incredibly cheap and easy to find. Below are instructions for turning these regular old jars into counter top eye candy…

You will need: blue painter’s tape, paper towels, gloves, white flat spray paint, gold metallic spray paint, mason jars in various sizes… (and I used a vintage shot glass for the bobbypin holder, but that’s optional.)

  1. Remove the lids from your mason jars.
  2. Put painter’s tape along the edge of a paper towel or two.
  3. Wrap the jar. For the first color, I wrapped the tape straight across as you can see in photo 3.
  4. Tuck the excess paper towel inside the jar so no spray paint gets inside.
  5. Put your gloves on, go outside, put a piece of newspaper or cardboard down and spray your jar. I applied very thin layers of paint instead of one thick layer. It dries faster, won’t drip and gets better coverage.
  6. Remove the blue tape and paper towel after the first color dries completely.
  7. If you’re sure the first color is dry, wrap the jar with the tape + paper towel again, but this time in another direction. I wanted to do mine diagonal.
  8. Put your gloves back on and go back outside. Spray the second color and wait for it to dry. I LOVE the matte white with the shiny gold combo but you can use any color that you think will look good in your bathroom. Remove the tape when it’s dry and you’re done!
