MANI MONDAY

PHOTOS/POST/DESIGN: KRISTIN ESS for TBD

We’re mixing it up this 4th of July! Instead of the typical red, white + blue nail art wanted to do something a little more chic and wearable. Right now we’re pretty obsessed with white nails because they just look so clean and classic. The only thing that could make a white nail better would be adding a little GOLD! Today we’re doing our own take on the 4th of July mani to share with you gorgeous gals before the upcoming holiday. First let’s talk about how to make a star…

Remember the tutorial on how to make a heart? This is similar. We’re using the mechanical pencil method from this tutorial because you can get finer lines when making a star than you can when using a toothpick or dotting tool. So first you want to make a little puddle (a drop really) of paint as seen above, then scoop a little polish up on the pencil. (more…)

CONFETTI NAILS

There are so many reasons to celebrate — your birthday, friends’ birthdays, holidays and every day in between. Today we’re partnering up with Beauty.com to celebrate their Friends & Family Event (which is happening now!) and to show you a crafty way to add this pretty party to your nails. My favorite part about this manicure is that you’re just punching out tissue paper circles and applying them to the nail. No major skills required, unlike most nail art! Here we go:

  1. Punch out tissue paper circles. Put about 5-7 pieces on top of each other to get a good solid punch.
  2. Paint the base of the nails with any color you want. We used Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Nail Lacquer in Cruising because clearly metallic gold says party.
  3. Use a pen to pick up the pieces of confetti and lay them down on the wet nail polish. Make a couple pieces overlap and/or cut some of the pieces down so you can lay them against the cuticle as seen in the final photo.
  4. Let some of the confetti pieces hang over the edge and trim them down when you’re done laying them all down.
  5. Once all of the pieces are where you want them, go over the whole nail with a good top coat!

The Beauty.com Friends & Family Event is a twice-yearly event that gives you the rare opportunity to enjoy 20% off your favorite brands, like Urban Decay, Philosophy, Deborah Lippmann & many more. It ends on Friday 11/9 at 11:59pm PST!

PRETTY IN PINK

Today we’re on set shooting and I have to decide between my current favorite pinks. It’s not easy but each one has its own finish + color payoff. I’m sure you’ve noticed the last time you were at the store that there were a gazillion versions to choose from that are not your mother’s lipstick.  As your pocket makeup artist, I’ll walk you through each choice and why I like it…

THE JUST-BITTEN STAIN: This little beauty delivers a sheer stain to add color in a very fairy tale, “I have naturally bright pink lips, sorry!” kind of way. TBD Favorite: YSL Rouge Pur Couture Vernis in #14.

THE HIGH PAY-OFF TINTED BALM: This is for those of us who hate the feeling of wearing more than a lip balm, but don’t want to sacrifice color! TBD Favorite: Tarte LipSurgence in Amused.

THE INTENSE GLOSS: This is for the girl who loves a shiny glossy lip but still wants to rock a bright shade. TBD Favorite: NARS Larger Than Life Gloss in Place Vendome.

THE HIGH-PIGMENT MATTE CRAYON: This wonder stick is for the retro girl who loves the classic edge of a matte lip. TBD Favorite: Bite Beauty Matte Pencil in Grapevine.

THE DAREDEVIL MATTE GLOSS-STAIN HYBRID: This goodness-in-a-tube is like nothing you’ve ever felt before! It stains your lip for hours but in a matte finish and comes in the brightest array of colors possible. TBD Favorite: Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tars in Brights.

Which is your favorite? What drugstore brands do you find have the most pink payoff?
