FLIP IT!

POST & PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY NADINE, GRAPHIC DESIGN BY EUNICE CHUN

I’ve learned through the years that not only are all eyes shaped differently and require different makeup applications, but my clients have very strong preferences on how they like to have their eyes done! I have a dozen clients that refuse to wear liner on the upper lid and only want it along the bottom. In the beginning (travel back to 2003) I didn’t really understand why  and just thought different strokes for different folks… then I realized it’s because they didn’t want to lose any upper eye space that could potentially close up their eyes or make them look smaller! Genius, actually! So today I present the Upside Down Cat Eye, a dramatic style for those with smaller eyes or those who just want to try something different!  (more…)

ELECTRIC BLUE EYE POP

POST + PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY NADINE, GRAPHIC DESIGN BY EUNICE CHUN

If Coachella Coral is the It Lip Color for Spring, then this is the It Shade for the eye! It all started at the Marc Jacobs runway show and has been popping up everywhere since. Why? Because it’s bold yet wearable and makes a gorgeous statement. So today I’m serving it up four ways for whatever way calls to you and says “Wear me!”:

MENU:

  • CAT EYE: Blue Liquid Liner — I used Lime Crime Liquid Liner in Lazuli. This ultra-flirty option is really easy to do since all of our TBD readers have mastered the cat eye by now… (if you’re tardy to the party, revisit my Cat Eye 123 Tutorial or Get Catty Video). All this look entails is switching to a blue liquid liner!
  • COLOR WASH: Blue Eye Shadow — I used Nautalus Prime from the Lime Crime Aquataenia Palette but NARS Single Shadow in Outremer is also incredible. This is how the models wore their eye makeup in the Marc Jacobs show and is really simple as well. All you have to do is apply the single blue color all over the upper lid and crease.
  • COLORED LASHES: Blue Colored Mascara — I used Butter London Wink Mascara in Inky Six. If you can apply mascara, you can rock this look. It’s the most subtle of the four but still very pretty. If you’re not ready to wear blue mascara, layer it over black mascara for an even more subtle blue.
  • DOUBLE RIM: Blue Waterproof Eyeliner — I used Stila Smudge Stick in Ultramarine. Line the upper lashline than either the lower lashline or the inner waterline.

Pair each look with a pale pink, peach or nude lip and cheek to let the eyes have the limelight. And let us know which one is your favorite in the comments below!

CAT EYE BUMP UP

POST + PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY NADINE, GRAPHIC DESIGN BY EUNICE CHUN

Super excited because today I’m starting a new makeup series of all the different ways to bump up your day makeup for nighttime! So let’s kick it off with the cat eye! Of course, you’re more than welcome to not change a thing about your cat eye when you leave work or school and meet friends or a date out on the town (in that case, you just go back over it with the liquid liner in case it’s faded a little). Or you can thicken it up a little and change the wing shape for extra drama. Here’s how:  (more…)

HOW TO DRAW A PERFECT CAT EYE… EVERY TIME

We’ve given cat eyes a lot of attention (revisit our Get Catty Video Tutorial and even our Double Line Tutorial) yet we still hear that you want more practice! So we asked our guest blogger Carissa Ferreri to chime in with her take on it, because she wears winged liner every single day. Here’s her advice:  (more…)
