As a fellow lover of design and style, this makeup trend makes me so happy. You pick one shade and wear it on the eye, cheek and lip. Obviously don’t pick blue or something unrealistic! There’s something gorgeous that happens when everything is in harmony. If you have cool undertones, pick a pink or berry and if you have warm undertones, pick a peach or a burnt rust like I did here on Penelope. If you have neutral undertones, you can wear them all! Here’s how:

STEPS:

  1. Apply the shadow all over the lid and crease for a single wash of color (no separate cut crease).
  2. Sweep the same shadow along the lower lashline.
  3. Apply a couple coats of the brown mascara.
  4. Rim the inner waterline with the brown kohl pencil.
  5. Add the blush to the top half of the apples or along the cheekbone.
  6. Finish by filling in the entire lip area with the lipstick.

LIP TREND ALERT

My favorite lip trend of the year so far on the runways, style blogs and red carpets is (of course) the deep mahogany lip. It’s also called a wine lip (or cabernet or burgundy) or a vamp lip. But this one is a little less purple-based and a little more brown/red based. Anyway, I have yet to find a skin tone that it doesn’t look gorgeous on! Typically it’s paired with a more simple eye (as not to compete with it), but I wanted to show on my friend Charlene that you can pair it with a smoky eye as well. Here’s how to rock it yourself:

TOOLS:

STEPS:

  1. I assume it’s a given that you’ll prep with a moisturizing lip balm, but just in case, this is not the time to forget! So apply it, work on the rest of your face while it penetrates then lightly blot it off. Next grab the lip pencil and line the perimeter of the lip area.
  2. Continue by filling in the entire lip area with the lip pencil.
  3. Now apply the lipstick directly on top thickly. Press hard to really coat it. If you want to make it last longer, blot it with a tissue and add one more coat.

I’m not sure if you follow my career but I had the pleasure of creating this lip on Krysten Ritter (aka Jessica Jones!) last month at the Costumer Designers’ Guild Awards and used this matte version in Glastonbury ($$).

March 1st is the perfect time to start transitioning your makeup for Spring. Okay, we still aren’t leaving home without coats and scarves but the promise of warmer weather is enough to lighten our spirits! And the perfect way to reflect that with our makeup is to start dusting a little bronzer on our lids and our faces. Here’s how:

TOOLS:

EYE STEPS:

  1. Sweep the copper shade all over the lid and crease.
  2. Trace the same shade along the lower lashline as well.
  3. Stamp the gold shade on the center of the lid to give it a pop.
  4. Line the upper lashline with the bronze pencil.
  5. Coat the lashes with mascara.

FACE + LIP STEPS:

  1. Suck in your cheeks and follow the hollow with the bronzer.
  2. Continue sweeping it on the temples.
  3. Apply it along your hairline.
  4. Don’t forget your jawline.
  5. And sweep the remaining bronzer on the sides of your nose and across the bridge of your nose to give it that sun-kissed look.
  6. Smile and pop the blush on the top half of your cheekbones.
  7. Finish by filling in your lip area with the liquid lipstick.

LAZY GIRL MAKEUP COMPARISON

Have you ever been so busy that you only had time to do one makeup product? Or so lazy that you could barely bother with more than one? I thought it might be helpful to compare what a face would look like with only mascara on… or only lipstick, etc. Just to see which makes more of an impact or which has just enough of an impact to get you through your day with confidence. Actually, I go all around town with zero makeup on and feel pretty cute but it took me years to get there! Anyway, let’s walk through each look:
