BEAUTY BITES

Breakfast just got a whole lot prettier! We’re going to need you to stop what you’re doing and go find the biggest bowl in your cupboard. Got it? Great! Now it’s time to make a killer new breakfast trend called the acai bowl. It’s made up of dreamy, frozen acai puree and topped with things like fresh fruit, granola, and coconut. Everything you could want out of breakfast all in one. Of course, it’s no secret that acai is a super food loaded with benefits, but more on that later..

This dish is more of an “assembly” rather than a recipe. Our favorite kind! You’ll need to start with frozen acai puree, and we particularly love this one which can be found in the freezer section at your local supermarket. Another route is to use acai powder and blend with frozen fruit to DIY your own frozen puree. Either way is delicious! Once you have your acai base in your bowl, it’s time to top! Our favorites are a good oat and flax granola, some fresh berries, coconut and sliced banana. Such a winning combo! Around LA acai bowls have become insanely popular, especially during the hot summer months. Other topping options we’ve spotted are almond butter, chia seeds, hemp seeds, mango, blackberry, kiwi, gogi berry, honey, and the list goes on. You can really add anything you want!

We especially love this breakfast option because of the countless benefits that come with eating acai. In Brazil, they refer to acai as “the beauty berry” which we LOVE because of all the good it does your body from the inside out. We don’t know about you, but we can get on board with a diet rich in beauty berries! While acai has most of the vitamins found in other fruits, it also contains compounds found in no other fruit making it completely unique! It might surprise you that the little acai berry packs more grams of protein than an egg (say what?), and when combined with its host of omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids, acai has been shown to improve the look and texture of your hair, skin and nails. Acai also ranks among the highest antioxidant rich foods. They are seriously loaded! With all those antioxidants, it’s sure to help fight free radicals keeping the skin looking younger and healthier. All hail the acai!

We are officially in the final countdown for the summer season to begin! We don’t know about you, but when it’s a zillion degrees outside all we crave is something refreshing, light and more often than not, something involving WATERMELON. If summer had a mascot, this gorgeous fruit would definitely be it. This beat-the-heat, picnic staple fits the bill in the beauty benefit department as well as having a major yum-factor. Whether you slice it up and chow as is, or incorporate it into a fun dish a la today’s recipe, we think everyone should have this farmstand favorite on hand all season long!

Before we get into the recipe (well, more like an easy assembly of yumminess!), here’s what you’ll need and here is why you need it!

1. PINEAPPLE: We think it’s impossible to eat a bite of pineapple and not suddenly feel like you are on a tropical vacation (all the more reason). Pineapple has huge amounts of vitamin C and manganese, both of which are primary antioxidants working to fight free radicals; promoting anti-aging. It also contains vitamin B-1 which is a major energy booster. More energy = being more active and that radiates from the inside out!

2. Oh hey there, WATERMELON: We just love you and your beautiful pinky-red self. It’s because of that pinky-red hue that watermelon contains lycopene, an anti-imflamatory and well-known anti-oxidant helping to neutralize those pesky free radicals. The more antioxidants in your diet, the more protected your skin is from pre-mature aging and pollutants.

3. CUCUMBER: Cucumbers are very high in silica, which is essential for building and maintaining strong nails, bones, teeth and promoting hair growth. Not to mention the flesh of a cucumber is 96% water…hello hydration!

4. BASIL: You won’t be able to avoid these big green bunches of fresh basil come summer time…and we aren’t complaining! Eating raw basil can help purify your blood from toxins. This is most helpful if you are blemish prone!

5. FETA CHEESE: Now this one doesn’t exactly rank super high on the benefit meter…but this recipe was just begging for its crumbly, salty goodness. We couldn’t resist!

Now that we have our fresh ingredients, sharpen your chef’s knife and get choppin! You’ll want to dice everything as small as you can.

So, to make our Watermelon Tartare, we used a ring mold to layer our ingredients (you can also use a biscuit cutter). Of course you could just add your chopped ingredients to a bowl/plate, but we were obsessed with how easy it was and what a presentation huh?

We started with cucumbers at the bottom, pineapple next, then watermelon, feta and finished off with pretty basil confetti. Then you gently lift off the ring mold and VOILA!

We are picturing this cute, yummy idea at just about all of our summer BBQ’s. This has Memorial Day and July 4th written ALL over it. Our heart is bursting with watermelon emojis!

Toast can be a dangerous thing. Nine times out of ten it’s used only as a vehicle for butter, sugary jams/jellies….gobs of Nutella at two in the morning (we’ve been there and we know you have too). It’s time to turn your toast into a jet plane packed with beauty fuel cargo! Starting with a whole grain or sprouted grain golden brown piece of toast and adding sliced or mashed avocado is perfect as a quick breakfast, lunch or ideal at snack time. We’ve taken this tasty concept one…actually THREE steps further to show you some beautifying ways to top your avo-toast!

Before we get into these gorgeous toppers, let’s have a chat about the wonder ingredient that is avocado. This beautiful fruit (yes, it’s a fruit) is super rich in dietary vitamins A an E and is most beneficial to the skin. With concentrated levels of vitamin A, its like a natural retinol alternative which increases cell turnover. Studies have shown that avocado consumption can increase the amount of soluble collagen in the skin which translates to better skin repair. A.k.a a dream in reducing sun damage, hyper pigmentation and scarring. Chowing on plenty of avos can also improve signs of a dry scalp and help hydrate skin in general from the inside out.

So, we have our avo-toast doing all kinds of wonders for our skin. Now, what else can we add?

1. RADISH + EDAMAME: This combo is not only delish, but comes complete with a few beauty benefits of their own. Radishes have a high water content and lots of vitamin C which is nourishing for the tissues helping to keep your body hydrated. Hydration = best beauty benefit in the book. Edamame contains isoflavones which many studies have shown aid in the prevention of collagen breakdown…another skin friendly food!

2. EGG + TOMATOES: Tip! Eating your eggs with the yolk in tact {perfect poaching demo here} helps to preserve the nutrients as opposed to scrambling them where the high heat exposure lowers the benefits. Eggs are loaded with Omega 3 fatty acids which can be responsible for strong, healthy nails that won’t split every time you reach for your handbag. Tomatoes are packed with lycopene (what gives them their pigment) which is a powerful antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory that helps protect skin from environmental agents. That’s definitely a dynamic duo.

3. RED PEPPERS + OLIVES: Red peppers, like tomatoes also have lycopene (which we discussed and love) but they also have a unique ratio of vitamin A and C. This combo creates a huge antioxidant capacity which is very beneficial to your skin. Olives are rich in fatty acids and antioxidants that nourish, hydrate and protect the skin. Chief among those is vitamin E which has been shown to protect the skin from UV radiation. Basically a super tasty sunscreen!
