KITCHEN BEAUTICIAN: SCALP REMEDY

Photos: Kristin Ess, Written by: Sarah St. Lifer, Graphic Design: Eunice Chun

Lately, the lyric “momma told me there’d be days like this” has been on repeat. Between the sun’s rays giving our scalp a royally red glow and the chlorine from our BFF’s pool, our strands have taken a serious beating this summer — and it’s not even August yet! We really should’ve followed our mother’s advice — it’s important to wear many hats (literally).

So, in an effort to revive our manes + scalp, we’ve created a tea tree mask that not only helps eliminate dandruff, dryness, and other warm-weather hair woes, but also helps us stay cool. The refreshing scent is a great way to beat the summer heat: just apply this mixture after shampooing and let it penetrate for 10 minutes (feel free to spend that time in front of the A/C or drinking a tall glass of lemonade!). Comb through and rise, and get ready for a more moisturized head of hair. If you’ve chemically treated your hair or happen to be around a group of children (a.k.a. potential lice carriers), the treatments are perfect for preventing damage and keeping bugs at bay.

Ready to whip up your very own tea tree hair mask? We’ll meet you in the kitchen!

1. Choose a base — one cup of plain yogurt or one whole avocado mashed up. Both are thick enough to act as a paste and will also moisturize with their abundance of healthy fats. Here, we chose avocados.

2. Add 10 drops of argan oil.

AT-HOME HAIR GLAZING

POST/PHOTOS: KRISTIN ESS

Glazing your hair is really important, particularly if you tend to go an extra long time between cuts or colors. Hair gets dull and luckily there is an at-home solution to lackluster locks– glazing. Think of it like a topcoat for your nails, but instead it’s for your hair. Glosses and glazes help seal the cuticle down and increase shine, big time. I put a color glaze on every single client after I do their hair because it seals in all the hard work we’ve done. Luckily, many companies have started making glazes that you can buy and do on your own at home without having a pro license. 10 years ago I would have said it was a bad idea to do this at home without the supervision of a pro, but the new glosses are completely user friendly. You can see the difference in Katie’s hair below. We used a gloss that had a golden tone to it. It warmed up her hair and left it super shiny.

For this tutorial we used Redken Shades EQ Crystal Clear + Shades EQ Processing Solution. Admittedly, the bottles are kind of expensive, but you’ll get many uses out of each one. For Katie’s hair we used 2 ounces of the Crystal Clear and 2 ounces of the Processing Solution. If you have the same amount of hair, you would get 8 treatments out of both bottles combined.

A more accessible and user friendly at home glaze is John Frieda color glaze. ($10) available in several shades. (For this one you shampoo and conditioner first as opposed to the one we applied to dry hair.)

Are you a big swimmer? What if we told you that for around $75-100 you could save your hair from that dry, brittle feeling you get from swimming (and/or an unnecessary haircut)? Save up those dollars and make it a priority to build a swim kit for yourself! (more…)

HAIR SPF

Written by Sarah St. Lifer, Graphic Design by Eunice Chun

Considering much of our 9-to-5 takes place within the walls of the TBD offices, we’ll take any excuse to spend some time outdoors. Not that it takes much — our HQ is located in L.A., meaning our scalps are exposed to some serious sunshine every time we step out the front door. Rather than reach for a cap or close the sunroof, we’ve discovered a slew of products that promise to protect all types of tresses from harmful UVA/UVB rays. Whether you’re a fellow SoCal dweller or traveling to a faraway paradise, make sure to keep some SPF handy — for your shoulders and your strands (just don’t get the two mixed up!)

1. Kerastase Micro-Voile Protecteur (this one has always been our favorite, but unfortunately it has been discontinued. However, you can still get it on sites like this, this, & this): Kudos to Kerastase for kicking butt in nearly every hair care category! The Cristallister shampoo and conditioner (as seen here!) have revived even our driest and dullest moments, so we weren’t the least bit surprised to learn that the cult brand is one of the leading labels for sun-exposed hair. The entire Soleil collection is worth the splurge, especially if your strands are sensitive, colored, and have plans to lay poolside all summer long. But, if you can only purchase one product, we suggest the Micro-Voile Protecteur: just spray from roots to tips pre and post-swim, or as soon as you hop out of the shower for a day-long barrier. The UV filters protect your mane from anti-photo degradation, and the mineral oils help resist humidity and water. Plus, your locks feel ultra smooth and look super shiny.

2. Redken Color Extend Sun Solar Screen: Although ombre is 100% on-trend, we refuse to let Mother Nature take the reigns and fade our fabulous color. Treated or entirely natural, Redken’s Color Extend collection is ideal for our outdoorsy readers. And, the brand’s Sun Solar Screen SPF 12 is a triple-threat of sorts: The soplexyl helps prevent UVA/UVB rays, the mango oil replenishes moisture and vibrancy, and the creamide repairs and resurfaces. Plus, if you’re prone to scalp sunburns, the SPF prevents redness, peeling, and flaking.

3. Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil: Detangler, beach spray, sun shield — this bottle does it all! Whether your summer plans involve lounging at a tropical resort or white water rafting, the mist promises to remain water and UV-resistant for up to 16 hours. The UVA/UVB filters are derived from wintergreen and cinnamon bark oils, the anti-oxidizing blend of green tea extract, certified-organic sunflower oil, and vitamin E help protect against free radicals, and the certified-organic shea butter, coconut, and palm oils condition and detangle. Sounds like a recipe for great hair…all summer long!

4. Kiehl’s Color-Protect Shine Infusing Hair Oil Treatment: For all you lazy gals, listen up: Kiehl’s has created a leave-in oil treatment that not only protects with SPF 10, but keeps tresses looking lush and breakage-free. The sunflower seed oil is rich in antioxidants, giving hair some much-needed moisture, and the apricot kernel oil is full of fatty acids, which restore shine and nourishment. Whether you’re taking precautionary measures, or need to right some wrongs, just spray this bad boy while you’re hair is still damp and continue styling as you normally would. Easy!

5. Wella Professionals Sun Protection: For the thicker-haired honeys out there, let us introduce you to the sun protection cream that works in two phases. First, the product is applied evenly to damp tresses and immediately begins guarding all hair types — curly, wavy, straight — from the elements. Then, during phase two, you’ll start to notice intense hydration thanks to a special vitamin complex andPanthenol. Doesn’t leave hair greasy or sticky — perfect for those days where a wash and style isn’t in the cards.
