TOOL TIME (STRAIGHT HAIR)

post/graphic design: Kristin Ess

Okay all you straight hair Sallys! It’s your turn. Today we’re going over the essentials for your bathroom. Whether you struggle with how straight your hair is or you love it, these are great things to have on hand for changing things up. As always if you have something you LOVE that you think we missed on this list, we would love to hear about it in the comment section below. Here we go!

  1. Sectioning clips. It’s really important to section your hair when trying to build volume, assuming that’s what you want to do. If you like the straightness of your hair and want to maintain it, you’ll still get a shinier, smoother, sleeker blowout when you section it off.
  2. Blowdryer. That’s pretty obvious. You’ll want one with a cool button because setting the hair with cool air is what will make it stay longer.
  3. Filter for the shower. Vital. Straight hair can become heavier and straighter with film caused by different elements in our shower water. Keep that heaviness away by putting a filter in the shower. There are several options at Sephora.
  4. Teasing brush. Stop trying to get volume with a comb. You’ll save so much time by getting one of these natural bristled teasing brushes.
  5. Metal core round brush. These serve as a curling iron when they heat up so you could avoid using an actual iron if you can get the right bend with one of these.
  6. Mason Pearson style brush. Massage your scalp and encourage hair growth with a Mason Pearson style flat brush. Actual Mason Pearsons cost a fortune but there are great alternatives out there. I like the ones by Denman mentioned in this article I wrote a long time ago!
  7. Extra-large sponge rollers or velcro rollers. These help set your hair and give you that major bounce you want, which you can’t typically get with straight hair. Remember this tutorial?
  8. Emi Jay hair ties. One of my favorite tricks for straight hair is tying it up on top of the head for 20 or 30 minutes using one of these. Letting the hair dry a little while the follicles are going in an upward direction helps add a little more volume and keep the hair from laying super flat.
  9. Hot rollers. Obviously a straight haired gals best friend. May seem old-school but still a great way to get lasting waves.
  10. Various curling irons. Straight hair is a blank canvas. Never overdo it but definitely try different things. Challenge yourself and try not to use curling irons on super straight hair more than a few days a week.

Anything you want to add? xo

DETANGLING MADE EASY

photos/design: Kristin Ess article: Sarah St. Lifer

Whether you have long hair, short hair, curly hair, straight hair, fine hair, thick hair, wavy hair, natural hair or fake hair, you should own this brush. Many others boast the ability to glide through dry hair like NBD, but we’ve been hard-pressed to find a brush that eliminates tangles without the inevitable Advil dosage post-styling. Short + thick bristles barely get the job done, leaving paddles looking like a stray strand graveyard. Well, while on vacay, our TBD hair guru did the unthinkable — stuffed a suitcase but forgot to pack a brush. Naturally, she hightailed it to the nearest drugstore and scooped up a replacement– this Conair Detangling Brush to be exact. The packaging promised zero snagging and hair-pulling, all for less than $5. Hesitant,  she took the new tool to her hotel room — and hasn’t put the thing down since! Mayyyybe our entire team has followed suit, and mayyyybe she bought one for each of her salon clients. Why? Well, because this thing delivers. Knots from damaged ends are a distant memory, and one touch to your roots and you’re in instant cranium heaven — it seriously doubles as a scalp massager. Trust, there will be no more wincing with each stroke — a true blessing for those with sensitive scalps, especially now that the windows are down every time we get behind the wheel!

Ps– I know curly girls are going to challenge the opinion that hair can be brushed while dry, but just give this brush a shot before inserting an opinion! It’s incredibly flexible/soft and truly does not break the hair off.
