It feels like every time you walk down the hair aisle at your favorite store, there’s something epic and new, doesn’t it? As a stylist, I think that’s cool, as I’m very into mixing hair and technology. Hair products are always evolving and styling products in particular are constantly one-upping themselves. Never in a million did I think I’d see the day when alcohol-free aerosol hairspray would be a thing. Last month, Pantene introduced just that. It’s called AIRSPRAY and it’s the first alcohol-free aerosol styling product on the market. Needless to say we had to try it to see what it could actually do. We did our own kind of experiment– three-styles-in-two-days kind of experiment. Here’s how that went down…

  • First things first, we gave it the undone wave test. This hair was airdried without product, and then we did some loose waves using a 1 1/4″ barrel, then sprayed with THIS HAIRSPRAY. We scrunched it in and loosely broke up the waves using just our fingers, no brush.

  • As you can clearly see, separation was good and waves became a bit fuller. The hair didn’t feel product-y at all, but did take a teeny bit longer to evaporate (obvs because there’s no alcohol) but we were down to wait.

  • Happy to report that after spraying one light veil all over, the hair was still soft to the touch.

  • Our next mane move happens that same day. Sunday evening dinner with girlfranz. The cool thing about AIRSPRAY is that you can layer it without the hair starting to feel “crunchy” or dry.

  • We created a single cornrow down the center of the hair. Once you get to the nape of the neck, tie it off with a clear elastic. (Grab a friend who can braid if you can’t do this part yourself.)

  • Next, join the sides together in a low ponytail and bind it all together using another elastic. Your waves may or may not need another light layer of spray! We did! Still touchable and soft, btw.

  •  Use your tail comb to smooth down any flyaway hairs around your face.

  • Here’s how this looks from the front. I know you want to know! I was very curious about how it would look from the front when we started this. You can hardly see anything which is rad because when you turn around it’s like OH HAIIIII!

  • Okay, now let’s say you have a really long night for one reason or another, ya know? And let’s say Monday morning you have to pull yourself together for work kind of early. Good news is, you can still keep working with this look and you don’t have to wash your hair. YAAAAAY!

  • Take the outside rubberband out but not the second one. Keep the braid in place.

  • Take a smoothing brush, spray a little more of that AIRSPRAY goodness on the brush. Now smooth the hair back into a sleek low pony and secure it with an elastic.

  • Add a light mist of spray on to the ponytail and twist.

  • Coil that sleek pony into a bun and secure. Once you’ve done that, you can smooth out any fly-aways using a little more spray.

It’s pretty cool that you can keep on keepin’ on with an alcohol-free AIRSPRAY without the fear of major dryness. If you end up trying it or if you already have, tell us what you think! Were you able to layer it? Brush it? Re-style with it? You can also review it on

Hope you guys enjoyed this tutorial. Which of these 3 looks is your favorite? Considering it’s Valentine’s (0r) Gal-entine’s Day weekend, this could come in extra handy if you have to work on Monday morning, AMIRIGHT?

We’re super excited that one of our favorites Carol’s Daughter has expanded their reach into the world of styling! The reason we love Carol’s Daughter so much is because they’ve always been so focused on moisture and repair of the hair, and their new styling products are no exception. We were lucky enough to get the first look at their newest video tutorial starring their brand new Monoi Flexible Hold Hair Spray and because we’re no strangers to step-by-step tutorials, we really love this one because it shows us five styles to create over five days, which is awesome for the girl on the go!

For those of you who haven’t tried this flexible hold spray yet, you’re in for many happy hair days! The hold is buildable, brushable and invisible as opposed to a traditional hair spray that can create stiff, crunchy “helmet” hair. It’s actually meant to be brushed through, so you can change up your hair styles as many times as you need to, as opposed to traditional hair spray that flakes and breaks as you brush and restyle.

This is possible because it has Monoi Oil in it! In the French Polynesian Islands, Tahitian gardenia petals are soaked in coconut oil to create what they call Monoi Oil. It’s incredibly repairing and hydrating, not to mention smells divine, and ingenious to sneak into a hair spray!

Enjoy these five looks that Carol’s Daughter’s team created to show how many ways you can style and restyle your hair with their Monoi Flexible Hold Spray! Remember to hold the nozzle 10-12 inches away from your hair when spraying. Spray before styling with hot tools, spray again to set, then if you want to restyle it later, simply brush through it.

You can get your hands on one at or exclusively sold at ULTA! And keep your eyes out for a step-by-step printable photo tutorial from us with our favorite ways to use it on both straight and curly hair!

Our last hair tutorial was dedicated to all of our stunning redhead + brunette readers, but today we’re highlighting the blondes (pun intended)! As many of us know, if you have blonde hair, or even blonde highlights added to brunette or red hair, that fresh, clean bright blonde can turn brassy real fast if it’s not properly maintained. Our friends over at John Frieda’s Destination Blonde have worked really hard to develop a special formula called Everlasting Blonde to keep your stunning shade right where you want it from day one.

  1. It’s important to start any hairstyle with a clean canvas. Use a generous amount of John Frieda Everlasting Blonde Shampoo. Work up a nice lather and make sure you really get into the lower/back of your head. People often make the mistake of missing this section which can lead to limp locks.
  2. Speaking of locks, next you’ll apply John Frieda Everlasting Blonde Conditioner to lock in moisture and tone by closing that cuticle!
  3. Once out of the shower, towel dry and comb through.
  4. Blow dry and follow the tutorial above to create a long lasting, classic curl.

Whether you wear your hair curled as Lauren shows us up top using a 1 & 1/2 inch barrel curling iron and setting clips, or wear it up in this super cute fishtailed topknot (tutorial coming soon), you can finish off the look by using John Frieda Crystal Clear Hair Spray to keep that beautiful blonde protected.

Hashtag #myblondelife on Instagram so we can see just who are blonde bombshell readers are! Then check out — a destination for all types of blonde hair (and maybe some exclusive photos of our lovely Lauren Conrad!).

3… 2… 1… Happy New Year!

Post + Graphic Design by Norah Curlee

Let’s face it, New Year’s Eve is a big night! Sealing off one year, and beginning another. It’s your responsibility as a glam goddess to be fully prepared, but how to streamline your essentials from your daily luggage down to your cutest clutch? Well here’s what TBD will have on hand when the ball drops. Perfectly portable in every way!

Paula’s Choice Brighten Up Teeth Whitener: Having a bright, white smile to go with your bold party lip is a must. We adore this on-the-go whitening stick that only takes 20 seconds to a noticeably whiter grill. Oh yeah!

Mini Living Proof Flex Shaping Hairspray: Whether you’ll be rocking a party bun or a braided crown or just luscious waves, you’ll need a little spritz to keep it all from getting cray. This no-crunch formula from Living Proof is at the top of our list these days.

Palladio Rice Powder Blotting Tissues: No need to carry around a powder compact with these babies. They are not only blotting tissues but they contain rice powder in various shades to match your skin tone. The only thing that will shine will be the confetti!

Sephora Collection Universal Atomizer: This little gadget is a scent saver! Annoyed when your absolute favorite fragrance doesn’t come in a roller ball or travel friendly bottle? This atomizer connects to your full size fragrance and pumps it directly into this portable spritzer. You’ll never fiddle with those spill-able perfume samples again.

Kate Spade Pearls iPhone Case: Ok, so this isn’t an essential, but how pretty! You’ll have your phone out all night taking selfies, Instagramming, and tweeting your way into 2014, so make sure your phone looks as fabulous as you do!

Almay Oil Free Makeup Eraser Sticks: These are genius. Seemingly just a q-tip but when bent they release makeup remover into the cotton tips. We can think of about a zillion ways where these would come in handy but removing lipstick and mascara/liner smudges are a few!

Wine Wipes: Planning on forgoing champagne and indulging in some serious red vino? The wine stained teeth and lips aren’t a good look so throw these wine wipes in your bag for quick removal. Bottoms up!

Sole Goddess Anti-Blister Balm: More than likely, when you head out for a NYE night on the town you won’t be wearing sneakers. You’ll be busting out the big girl heels! You’ll need this blister balm. Just trust us.

Lip Combo (an obvious must-have): A long wearing lip color + a lip liner are must-haves in your NYE clutch. Non-negotiable. This year we will be sporting Marc Jacobs Lacquer in Truth or Dare with YSL Lip Liner in Wine. Bold is gold!
