NEON AND ON AND ON

written by Jaclyn R. Johnson, post designed by Eunice Chun

The neon trend kicked off when every editor under the sun was carrying their Cambridge Satchel Company electric messenger bag (you all know the one!). Now the trend has moved into hair accessories, nail polish, socks, shoes, you name it! As such, we have put together a must-have list of neon items that are all under $75. Why under  $75? I believe that one should always splurge on classic pieces and go cheaper on trends (like neon, navajo, etc.). That being said, here are my picks:

Bottoms: Rag and Bone is making the hottest neon jeans out there (hands down) but I have to say TOPSHOP is coming in a close second and they are under $75!  Also on the radar and currently in my closet are the Sparkle & Fade neon minis at Urban, they are amazingly flattering and perfect for summer!

Accessories: I absolutely love this Neon Box Chain Necklace from Forever 21 only $10 and these hot pink neon socks from Topshop would look adorable paired with a summer wedge! I love the combination of the clear crystals and the bright neon ribbon in this piece and one of my fav online jewelry shop’s, Bauble Bar, has some amazing pieces including these adorable neon studs!  I am also a big fan of the neon bra trend (of course paired with a loose tank!). Lastly, a neon belt is a must have for the summer since it can add pop to any and all outfits.

Shoes: Neon shoes are showing major promise!  I think these super casual and fun neon VANS are perfect to pair with a floral summer dress! And these adorable Dolce Vita hot pink with metallic detail sandals look far more expensive then their $69 price tag and are definitely a must have.

Voila! You are all set! Nab a few of these neon items and you are sure to be on trend for the summer season!

BREAKING IN

post by Jaclyn Johnson, design by Kristin Ess

Today we’re talking tips + tricks. Jaclyn Johnson from SomeNotesOnNapkins.com is here to teach us a few things that are good for the sole…

There’s nothing better than breaking open that shoe box to find a fresh pair of heels ready and waiting for you to slip on. However, there is nothing worse than having to break in a pair of heels. Luckily, I am a Jedi Master at the art of breaking in shoes. Here are a few quick tips on how to cut down the time (and pain) of breaking in those new sky high heels!

Tip #1: Do it gradually: Bring them to the office. Slip them on while you are sitting at your desk for an hour or so each day. If they are really tight try walking around in them while wearing slightly damp socks. I know this sounds strange, but this will soften them and stretch them out. (more…)

MIXED METALS MANI:

TOOLS

Base & Top Coat Nail polish

Dark Gold Nail polish

Light Gold Nail polish

Gold Glitter Nail polish

Tape

STEPS

1. Start with bare nails shaped and ready for your manicure and apply a base coat.

2. Once the base coat has dried, apply 1-2 coats of your darker gold. If it has good coverage just stick with one coat because it will dry faster.

3. On your ring fingers, apply the light gold.

4. Get your glittery gold and apply it on top of the light gold on your ring finger. I like the look of the sparkles on the light gold. It’s totally up to you if you want to keep the darker gold as your base. {Make sure your dark gold nails dry completely before the next step! This can sometimes take up to 30 minutes}

5. Take a piece of tape and put it on your nail at an angle of your choice. It’s easiest to tape all of your nails at once so are not messing around with tape with wet nail polish.

6. Apply the light gold as if you are painting your whole nail. You do not want the paint to be too thick so try to stick to just one coat.

7. Let the paint dry for about 5 minutes and then remove the tape slowly.

8. Apply a top coat and your manicure is complete!!
