PRETTY IN PINK

photo: kristin ess/post: amy nadine

Today we’re on set shooting and I have to decide between my current favorite pinks. It’s not easy but each one has its own finish + color payoff. I’m sure you’ve noticed the last time you were at the store that there were a gazillion versions to choose from that are not your mother’s lipstick.  As your pocket makeup artist, I’ll walk you through each choice and why I like it…

THE JUST-BITTEN STAIN: This little beauty delivers a sheer stain to add color in a very fairy tale, “I have naturally bright pink lips, sorry!” kind of way. TBD Favorite: YSL Rouge Pur Couture Vernis in #14.

THE HIGH PAY-OFF TINTED BALM: This is for those of us who hate the feeling of wearing more than a lip balm, but don’t want to sacrifice color! TBD Favorite: Tarte LipSurgence in Amused.

THE INTENSE GLOSS: This is for the girl who loves a shiny glossy lip but still wants to rock a bright shade. TBD Favorite: NARS Larger Than Life Gloss in Place Vendome.

THE HIGH-PIGMENT MATTE CRAYON: This wonder stick is for the retro girl who loves the classic edge of a matte lip. TBD Favorite: Bite Beauty Matte Pencil in Grapevine.

THE DAREDEVIL MATTE GLOSS-STAIN HYBRID: This goodness-in-a-tube is like nothing you’ve ever felt before! It stains your lip for hours but in a matte finish and comes in the brightest array of colors possible. TBD Favorite: Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tars in Brights.

Which is your favorite? What drugstore brands do you find have the most pink payoff?

FALL TREND

I die for this color. Burgundy is by far the biggest color for Fall and I so badly want a burgundy handbag, leather jacket, corduroy jeans, wide-brimmed hat, shoes… anything and everything! A girl can dream… but in the meantime, who knew burgundy lips could be so gorgeous too? I never thought about this mulberry shade for myself; my eyes definitely but I guess I never thought I could pull it off as a lip color. I’ve been eyeing it in magazine editorials and on the runways but figured it was too high fashion for real life…

Until I had this a-ha moment…

EYE GLOSS

photo: unknown post designed by kristin ess

We see gorgeously slicked glossy eyes all the time in magazine fashion stories but it’s a tough one to translate into real life without creasing and traveling all over your face. Luckily, there are now glosses made just for an eyelid top coat.  The key is to first apply shadow, then apply the gloss on your lid ONLY, not in your crease, finishing by finger smudging the edges.

THE EVERY DAY WAVE

Follow these easy steps to get Lauren’s every day wave:

• Tools: protective serum or argon oil, 1″ barrel curling iron, light hold hairspray, comb.

• Work a small amount of protective serum through the ends of your hair.

• Using a 1″ barrell curling iron, curl sections of hair away from your face.

• (The section of your hair should be comparable to the size of the curling iron)

• Comb through curls to soften them up.

• To finish, spray hair with a light holding hairspray.

Additional information:

~ For this quick every day wave, I like to use a 1″ curling iron because when you comb out the curl it will loosen up and widen, making it look like you used a larger sized iron. This will also help your curl stay in longer.

~ I encourage you not to spray your hair with hairspray until the end. When you spray it before you curl, you are baking alcohol into your hair which will make your hair brittle over time. Hairspray is meant to be topical. If you need something to help hold curl, find a good protective thermal spray.
