PLAY TIME!

TUTORIAL + PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY NADINE, GRAPHIC DESIGN BY EUNICE CHUN

Today we’re making a case for why our fingers are our best tool! I was forced to learn this when I arrived overseas for a job and the bag with my brushes in it didn’t make it. With no time to go shopping, I sanitized my hands and just got in there! Brushes of course are amazing, but you might be surprised when you give your fingers a try. Why? Because your body temperature slightly melts the product, helping it to really become one with your skin instead of just sitting on top of it. And you can really press it into your skin as you stipple and tap your way around each feature. Here’s what you need to know to pull off finger painting in a way that actually lasts:

TOOLS:

  • Cream Eye Shadow — Bria Murphy is wearing our favorite mass market cream shadow, Maybelline Color Tattoo 24Hour Eye Shadow, while our favorite prestige cream shadow is Dior Diorshow Fusion Mono Mystic Metallics Shadow. They’re both our favorites because they don’t crease ( a nightmare with typical cream shadows) and don’t dissipate as the night goes on.
  • Cream Blush — We live for RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek Cream Blush (especially when we find it on sale!) because it’s a natural product that was developed by the iconic Rose Marie Swift who is responsible for the makeup in almost every Victoria’s Secret and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit campaign you’ve every gushed over. Her line is everything. We also really love Jouer Cheek Tint and have for years because it doesn’t disappear in a few hours.
  • Tinted Lip Balm — Bria is wearing Aerin Beauty Limited Edition Multi Color in Freesia, a gorgeous sheer finish with a calming rose scent.

STEPS:

  1. First wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap or use a hand sanitizer. After applying foundation (with your fingers so you can really massage it into the skin), swipe your ring finger against the cream eye shadow and tap and smear it along the upper and lower lid. You can choose a matte shade, a bright shade or a metallic shade… the possibilities are endless.
  2. Tap your index finger into the cream blush then tap it against your other index finger to warm it up and create more of a “slip”. Then smile in the mirror to pop out the apples and tap it along the upper half of the each apple as you work your way across your cheekbone. Tap and swirl until it melts into your skin and looks like a natural flush.
  3. Swipe your middle finger against the tinted lip balm and press it into the lip area for a really natural and gorgeous sheer pop of color.

We also love using our fingers with powder products too. Metallic, shimmer and glitter shadows actually work better with our fingers than a brush because you press it into the skin. You can use your fingers with matte shadows if you’re in a jam, but they can get muddy and work better with the sweep of a brush, as do powder blush and powder bronzer.

GO FOR THE GOLD!

If you’re a little tired of the same old same old… try this little gem! It’s daring yet gorgeous and perfect for your trendsetting self… not to mention really pretty on all skin tones! Here’s how:

TOOLS:

  • Gold Glittery Shadow — I used Stila Magnificent Metals Eye Duo in Comex because it’s the perfect consistency for glitter that I’ve ever come across as there is no fall out. Revisit my Get Sequined Tutorial to see it used all over the upper lid.
  • Contour Brush — If you haven’t picked up Chanel’s Contour Brush yet, get ready for your world to change! It’s this thin little shadow brush that you can use to make a perfect cut crease or like I did above to press the glittery shadow onto the skin.
  • Mascara — Wait until you get your hands on Lancome’s new Grandiose Mascara! The swan neck curls and flares out your lashes while the bristles perfectly separate them. I haven’t stopped using it since!
  • Pair it with any Lip Color — I used Dior Addict Fluid Stick in Aventure on Morgan above because it’s a gorgeous hybrid between a liquid lipstick and a gloss.

STEPS:

  1. Start with any matte nude shadow all over the lid. Don’t use a shimmer/pearlized finish as it will compete with the gold. It has to be matte!
  2. Dip the brush into the setting lotion (or simply dampen it with water) and tap it against the gold glitter to load it lightly. Gently press it along the inner half of the lower lid as demonstrated above. Just press and stamp it incrementally as you move along the lash line. Don’t sweep it!
  3. Skip eyeliner (another element that would take away attention from the gold goodness) but don’t skip on mascara! Two quick coats will do.

CHAMPAGNE WISHES

post + graphic design: Nora Curlee

This is the time of year where people are poppin’ corks left and right! Between holiday brunches, work parties and the New Year’s festivities, bubbly is flowing. We definitely aren’t complaining…instead we are inspired! So we raise a glass and toast to some of our favorite champagne inspired beauty bits. Cheers lovelies!

Butter London, The 444: All that glitters isn’t always gold but this polish comes in at #1 on Kristin Ess’s all-time favorite gold glitter list! That being said we want it on our tips ASAP. We’d say greeting 2014 with a party nail lacquered with this is a great start!

Origins Starting Over Age-Erasing Eye Cream with Mimosa: Mimosas are no longer only for brunch. Origins has infused this amazing eye cream with extract from the mimosa flower used to boost collagen production. An anti-aging invitation personally for your peepers!

Sweet Anthem Perfume in Caroline: Sweet Anthem is a tiny perfume studio created by Meredith Smith, where you’ll find 100% vegan friendly fragrances, custom perfumes, and indie and artisan scents, all crafted with love. The scent Caroline is a bubbles-and-fizz chypre perfume with top notes of champagne, bergamot and lemon. YUMMY.

L’Oreal Paris Infallible Eyeshadow, Eternal Sunshine: This champagne gold shadow has a festive metallic finish that is formulated to last all day (or most likely all night). Tip: dampen your eye shadow brush before applying for a more saturated finish!

MAKE UP FOR EVER Diamond Powder Champagne: We love this unique pigment because it is somewhere between a shimmer shadow and a loose glitter…but most definitely stunning! The particles are finer and literally radiate extreme brilliance as soon as they are applied!

St. Tropez Skin Illuminator in Gold: Get that golden, bubbly glow all over with this skin illuminator. As far as we’re concerned, bare legs shouldn’t enter a party without a layer of this. Shoulders and decollates also benefit from a bit of glow. A toast to your luminosity!

Guerlain L’or Radiance Concentrate With Pure Gold Make-up Base: This complexion perfecting primer is as decadent as a glass of bubbly itself. The 24-carat gold-infused cooling gel sinks into the skin, retaining moisture. Applied to bare skin, this skin enhancer and makeup primer smoothes fine lines and tightens facial features. It also provides an even finish under makeup. Cheers to that!

SEPHORA COLLECTION Glitter Eyeliner and Mascara VIP Gold: You know how we feel about double duty products and this little glimmering gem is no different. This doubles as a golden glitter mascara and a gold glitter liner. The mascara wand has a liner brush on the tip to ensure all around shimmer on your lashes and lids!

Smashbox O-Gloss Gold: We are big fans of the original O-Gloss, the mood-ring effect for your lips, but we are over the moon for this golden version! This gloss works with your natural body chemistry to give your lips a subtle, custom golden finish. Trust us, its gorgeous.

RMS Beauty Cream Shadow in Lunar: RMS Beauty pretty much takes the cake when it comes to cream products. We love this cream shadow in Lunar because of it’s golden glow-y essence! It can also be used as a highlighting product for the tops of the cheekbones, under the brow bone, and, our favorite, on the cupid’s bow for fuller looking lips!

Eminence Mimosa Champagne Tonique: This refreshing toner spritz purifies and hydrates to reveal a radiant, youthful complexion. It neutralizes free-radicals with antioxidant-rich champagne grapes, preventing hyper pigmentation as orange essential oils provide anti-inflammatory and antiseptic benefits to calm and sooth. Pour us another!

Z Bigatti ReStoration Champagne Gel Cleanser: Who says all the fun has to end when its time to take off the party rouge? This champagne infused gel cleanser is non-foaming so it won’t strip skin of its natural moisture. Skin is left hydrated and refreshed ready for its next adventure!

Happy New Year from everyone at thebeautydepartment! <3
