HAIR TALK: OBLONG FACE SHAPE

post: Kristin Ess graphic design: Eunice Chun

Could super-duper-model Joan Smalls be any more gorgeous!? She’s a prime example of someone with an oblong face shape. When it comes to this shape, the goal is to wear it proud if you’re happy with it or to widen the face to make it appear less long. If a client of mine comes in and has an oblong face shape, I usually suggest a long bang or layers that hit just below the eyes when the hair is dry– that will draw out the width of your face. I also explain that if you don’t have natural waves, the hair will need to be styled regularly to acheive the widening effect. Super straight hair on an oblong face will make it appear even longer. You want to make sure you are letting the cheekbones be clear and visible with an oblong shape. Here are some great ideas for all of you beautiful oblong girls! (more…)

HAIR TALK: SQUARE FACE SHAPE

post + graphic design: Kristin Ess

Last week we put up a chart that shows you HOW TO FIND YOUR FACE SHAPE. Hopefully you’ve all narrowed it down to one shape (or two if you’re a hybrid!) and are ready to talk about what cuts + styles work best for you. Don’t fret- we’re going to do a post on each of the 9 face shapes from our chart, so hang tight if you don’t see yours yet! It’s coming. Also, feel free to mix advice from two face shape posts if you think you’re a hybrid! Talk it over with your hairstylist if you’re not quite sure.

THE SQUARE: The goal with most face shapes we’ll talk about will be to either love it/embrace it/wear it proud like Olivia Wilde does in the bigger picture above with all of her hair pulled off of her face OR to do what you can to down-play your shape if it’s something that you don’t love. If you’re looking to down-play your square face shape, the goal will be to diffuse the 4 corners a little bit. Here are some great ways to do that. (more…)

BANG BOOM POW!

Tis the season for bangs, and verbally communicating what you want can be tough… “You know, like heavy but not too heavy, but like in my eyes, but not too much, but like whispy and blunt.” I hear that a lot. And while I’ve learned to translate this language, I still feel it’s always best to bring 1 or 2 pictures of the bangs you like and a picture of the bangs you don’t like. It makes communicating MUCH easier and could save you from annoying grow out period. Also, if one kind of bang isn’t a perfect fit, it’s ok to ask your stylist to create a hybrid of two! Here are a couple of the most requested bangs in my chair. Hope these help!

OH! And don’t forget to READ THIS if you have trouble styling your bangs!
