BEAUTY BITES

We are spreading the love today with three versions of our newest obsession: coconut spread! Who knew when you thoroughly blend raw shredded coconut, you are left with a butter like consistancy perfect for topping toast, crackers or any other usual suspect. Well, we know now! We want to put this stuff on just about everything, and since coconut is the main (and pretty much the only) ingredient, you will be reaping many a beauty benefit!

Coconut spread contains minimal ingredients and is super easy to make! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 8 ounces of raw unsweetended coconut
  • 2 tablespoons of melted coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

THE PROCESS:

In a blender add your coconut, vanilla and coconut oil. Blend a little at a time, stirring in between pulses until you are left with a paste or almond butter-like texture!

Once you have your plain coconut butter, now comes the fun part. Add whatever you want! We’ve made three flavors by mixing in smashed blackberries, chopped fresh figs and cacao nibs. This is your chance to get creative and add in whatever your little heart desires.

So far we’ve used this on toasts and in place of butter– aka: melting some into our oatmeal. No doubt it would be great on top of ice cream or gelato! So many uses for this deliciousness!

This is a cute handmade gift for a vegetarian/vegan friend, too! Just add some handwritten labels to the jars to identify each flavor.

As you may remember, this isn’t the first time coconut has made its way onto the TBD beauty plate, and for good reason. Between all the antioxidants that are great for the skin, hair and nails plus all the hydration benefits of coconut, it’s safe to say that it may be our favorite beauty bite ingredient of all time (gasp!). You heard us.

This is a new discovery for us so we hope some of you will try it out for yourselves! If you do decide to venture out into the coconut butter world, do show us on twitter @tbdofficial or instagram @thebeautydept. #beautybites #prettyontheinside

Breakfast just got a whole lot prettier! We’re going to need you to stop what you’re doing and go find the biggest bowl in your cupboard. Got it? Great! Now it’s time to make a killer new breakfast trend called the acai bowl. It’s made up of dreamy, frozen acai puree and topped with things like fresh fruit, granola, and coconut. Everything you could want out of breakfast all in one. Of course, it’s no secret that acai is a super food loaded with benefits, but more on that later..

This dish is more of an “assembly” rather than a recipe. Our favorite kind! You’ll need to start with frozen acai puree, and we particularly love this one which can be found in the freezer section at your local supermarket. Another route is to use acai powder and blend with frozen fruit to DIY your own frozen puree. Either way is delicious! Once you have your acai base in your bowl, it’s time to top! Our favorites are a good oat and flax granola, some fresh berries, coconut and sliced banana. Such a winning combo! Around LA acai bowls have become insanely popular, especially during the hot summer months. Other topping options we’ve spotted are almond butter, chia seeds, hemp seeds, mango, blackberry, kiwi, gogi berry, honey, and the list goes on. You can really add anything you want!

We especially love this breakfast option because of the countless benefits that come with eating acai. In Brazil, they refer to acai as “the beauty berry” which we LOVE because of all the good it does your body from the inside out. We don’t know about you, but we can get on board with a diet rich in beauty berries! While acai has most of the vitamins found in other fruits, it also contains compounds found in no other fruit making it completely unique! It might surprise you that the little acai berry packs more grams of protein than an egg (say what?), and when combined with its host of omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids, acai has been shown to improve the look and texture of your hair, skin and nails. Acai also ranks among the highest antioxidant rich foods. They are seriously loaded! With all those antioxidants, it’s sure to help fight free radicals keeping the skin looking younger and healthier. All hail the acai!

So tell us…have you ever tried acai? Any favorite ways to enjoy these “beauty berries”? Let us know in the comments! And as always, if you recreate this beauty bite be sure to share your snaps with us on twitter @tbdofficial or on our gram! @thebeautydept #prettyontheinside

Welcome to happy hour, Beauty Bites edition! So, technically this isn’t a cocktail, but we’ve subbed out the hangovers for hydration with our sparkling orange coconut waters! Coconut water on its own is quite bland and definitely an acquired taste that might not be for everyone. We’ve got a few tips and tricks on how to take your everyday coconut water, and turn it into something a bit more…FUN, all while maintaining those beauty benefits we all crave. We’ll drink to that!

These super refreshing drinks couldn’t be easier to make. Here’s what you’ll need:

1. Coconut water

2. Oranges

3. Limes

4. Sparkling water

5. Coconut milk

6. Mint

The Process:

Take the juice of one whole orange and one whole lime and pour into your glass. Next pour in your coconut water until your glass is about 3/4 of the way full. Top it off with sparkling water leaving a little room for our favorite part…the foamy top! To make it frothy we took some coconut milk and whisked it until it became thick and foamy (just like how you’d make whipped cream). Add your coconut foam right on top and a sprig of mint for freshness! These look and taste like you’re having an exotic cocktail on a beach somewhere. We are on board with that!

So now that we are all toasting to our health and sipping all the pretty drinks. Let’s chat for a minute about coconut water and why it’s so good for us. The main and most well known reason is for hydration and the replenishment of electrolytes in your body. It’s also effective in boosting proper circulation, allowing your skin to breathe plenty of healthy oxygen to help promote a good complexion. This amped up circulation also increases blood flow to the scalp to strengthen hair follicles and increase density. To add to the list, coconut water also has anti-aging and anti-carcinogenic properties which balance PH levels and keeps the connective tissues in your skin hydrated and strong.

Bottoms up ya’ll! Who likes the taste of coconut water on its own? Would you be more keen on trying it/drinking it mixed into a fun drink like this one? Let us know in the comments! Beauty Bites

Donuts are the new cupcake and cronuts are the new donut…but we think our croNOTS are the next big thing! (We’re calling it). You know after you core a ripe, juicy apple and slice it into rings? Looks kind of like a donut, huh? Well, with today’s Beauty Bite, we ran with it! With all the amazing beauty benefits apples bring, it really is true what they say about an apple a day…but we say bring on the toppings!

No wonder Snow White couldn’t resist…apples are such a gorgeous fruit! Not only are they easy on the eyes but these little pretties are a nutritional powerhouse. Among many various nutrients, apples have vitamins A and C, plus calcium, iron and fiber. You may already be familiar with the skin-supporting antioxidant benefits of vitamin C, as we’ve mentioned in previous posts, but one nutrient that shouldn’t be forgotten is fiber. An apple contains approximately 17% of your daily value of fiber, which is important for your body’s internal cleansing process. A beautiful body inside is a beautiful body outside! Apples also contain potassium, magnesium, and copper, all of which are beneficial to the hair by promoting growth, preventing loss and maintaining a healthy scalp. Score!

To make our pretty croNOTS, the first thing you’ll need to do is core all of your apples. You can use whatever type of apple is your favorite (so many to choose from!). Next you’ll want to slice your apple into rings…now do you see these donut-wannabees coming along?

Let’s talk toppings! To get the full donut effect you’ll need some “glaze” and some “sprinkles”. To keep things healthy, we used:

1. The “glaze”: We used flavored Greek yogurt and chose a few flavors that had especially pretty colors. For our chocolate fix, we made chocolate pudding out of an avocado…say what?! (Maybe that’s a post in and of itself!)

2. Fresh fruit. We sliced up some strawberries we had on hand, but you can use any fruit you like.

3. Almond butter. You could also use peanut butter or cashew butter.

4. “Sprinkles”: We used things like poppy seeds, almonds, cashews, peanuts, coconut, banana chips, dried apricots, dried cherries and pineapple…this is your chance to get creative with it!

Time to decorate! Make it fun…pretty food always tastes better.

We are dying to see your croNOT creations! Snap a pic and tag us! Instagram: @thebeautydept  Twitter: @tbdofficial

Enjoy!
