WINTER WEDDING HAIR IDEA

WINTER WEDDING HAIR IDEA the beauty department

hair/photo/post: kristin ess

My long-time client, Victoria, recently got married in Los Angeles and her wedding was stunning!! She wanted to wear her hair “mostly down” but “a little pulled back”. The photo up top is what we created. Since posting it on my instagram, I have gotten so many inquiries about what size iron I used and what product so I thought I would break it down for you guys! I also think this will be really useful for those of you who are getting married in the winter since bridal hair isn’t a popular topic during winter months… Here’s what I did an what I used!

  1. I prepped Victoria’s wet/towel dried hair with THIS MOUSSE. It’s great for volume and hold but it’s not sticky or crunchy. It helps me get a fuller more voluminous blowout for my foundation. An amazing, more affordable alternative is THIS!
  2. I didn’t use a round brush except around the front hairline. I just smoothed through with a blowdryer and my fingers.
  3. Next I sprayed a little bit of THIS HEAT PROTECTANT before going in with a hot iron.
  4. To create those waves, I used my 1 1/4″ MARCEL IRON. I wrapped the curls around the barrel instead of clamping them. If you’re not good with a marcel, try this 1 1/4″ CONICAL WAND instead! It’s very user friendly and I love it!
  5. Shake a little TEXTURE POWDER into the root once the hair is waved. This will help with your twist!
  6. Now you can spray a little bit of your favorite LIGHT HOLD HAIRSPRAY all over.
  7. Take a piece from each side and twist back, making them meet in the back/center. Slide your bobbypins in LIKE THIS to hide them.
  8. Give your hair one last spritz of light holding hairspray and you’re good to go.

If moisture in the air is a factor for you (depending on where you’re getting hitched!) you can finish the look with an ANTI-HUMECTANT spray that will repel all moisture. I highly recommend it if your hair tends to get frizzy with moisture.

This is just a breakdown on what I used to get this look, but if you want an actual tutorial for this with steps you just let me know in the comments and I’ll getcha one!

BEST OF 2015 MAKEUP EDITION

POST BY AMY NADINE, GRAPHIC DESIGN BY EUNICE CHUN

POST BY AMY NADINE, GRAPHIC DESIGN BY EUNICE CHUN

By now you know I like to streamline my kit often. Like quarterly. Okay, monthly! Ten years ago I had two big suitcases filled with everything and the kitchen sink and lugged them from job to job out of insecurity. Then as the years passed and my confidence in my skills grew, I felt comfortable enough to narrow everything down to the best of the best. And now I have one suitcase small enough to carry on the plane! But I still  love to go from counter to counter to see what new products have come out that just might be better than the staples in my kit and when I find one that is extra special, I swap it in. So without further ado, here is a list of the makeup that I’ve found exceptional this year that made my work so much better (my mother always says “we’re only as good as our equipment!”), as well as more budget-friendly versions and my favorite four breakthrough innovations:

TBDBestof2015-Face

FACE:

  • Foundation (Splurge) — this one goes with me everywhere… in my purse! By Terry Light Expert Click Brush is so innovative because it comes in my favorite By Terry shades but I can do touch ups with just one click in my car, at work or in the bathroom of a restaurant. It has saved my life!
  • Foundation (Steal) — Covergirl Ultra Smooth Foundation comes with an innovative applicator that helps smooth over fine facial hairs and any tiny bumps.
  • Contour (Splurge) — Pur Minerals Cameo Contour Stick is a creamy formula that sets as a powder. It makes contouring and highlighting foolproof and comes with a blending sponge.
  • Contour (Steal) — NYX Wonder Stick also makes contouring and highlighting easy and comes in four shades. Technically, it’s $11.99 so if you want one under $10, try this one ($)!
  • Highlight (Splurge) — Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edit Palette is a limited edition that I plan to have and cherish for a very long time! It has three candlelit strobe highlighters, two blushes and a bronzer that make all together make you glow like you never have before.
  • Highlight (Steal) — Revlon Highlighting Palette comes in three palettes to look gorgeous on all skin tones and is sooooo pretty in a “I look sunkissed and healthy” kind of way!
  • Blush (Splurge) — Chosungah 22 Real Cheek Smoother Blush has fruit extracts in it, comes in three shades, is portable and really hydrating. I just love the way it looks on my clients and brings their canvas to life.
  • Blush (Steal) — Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Cheek Flush is also portable and instantly gives a pretty flush that looks real like my clients are in love and happy! And this powder blush ($) is always a staple in my kit.

TBDBestof2015-Eyes

EYES:

  • Eye Shadow (Splurge) — Charlotte has been an idol of mine for years. She’s responsible for Kate Moss’s rock n roll looks, Amal Clooney’s wedding day makeup and many of the best runway looks ever. So when she came out with her own makeup line last year, I was first in line to get my hands on it. And quickly swapped out many of my eye shadow palettes for her Charlotte Tilbury Luxury Palettes.
  • Eye Shadow (Steal) — I created the Amy Nadine Renewing Nudes Palette for a couple reasons. I almost always wet the brush before applying eye shadow on my clients so it’s more intense and lasts longer on the red carpet, but I can never get my clients to do it when they’re at home. Either they think it’s a pain to have an extra step or they don’t want a wet brush in their makeup drawer (I totally get it!). So I formulated these to be incredibly pigmented to go on as intensely as if they had wet the brush (but don’t with these!). And I wanted it to work with their skincare formulas instead of against them so I added bamboo silk, red raspberry seed oil, bilberry seed oil and clover flower extract to hydrate, smooth and power up with antioxidants. The palette retails for $40 but on the link above you can grab one for $15.99 even if you don’t have a membership (just leave that part blank when checking out!). You’ll love applying them with your fingers because they’re like nothing you’ve ever felt before.
  • Eye Liner (Splurge) — In 1995 I asked for Kevyn Aucoin’s The Art of Makeup book and started dreaming of living a life like his. So I’m not sure why it took me 20 years to get my hands on Kevyn Aucoin’s The Eye Pencil Primatif but better late than never! They blend and glide beautifully and I now use them on everyone.
  • Eye Liner (Steal) — I love L’Oreal Infallible Silkissime Liner because it glides on like silk then lasts for 16 hours. And I use this one ($) on the inner waterline.
  • Mascara (Splurge) — I’m so happy the Benefit Roller Lash was invented because it’s the first curling mascara that I’ve ever tried that actually curls the lashes then stays curled. I can’t keep them stocked enough in my kit because my clients always want to take it home with them LOL.
  • Mascara (Steal) — Rimmel ScandalEyes XX Treme is awesome because the wand builds volume and length. The formula dries very quickly though so don’t wait in between coats! And I love this black primer ($) on everyone!

TBDBestof2015-Lips

LIPS:

  • Lipstick (Splurge) — I’ve yet to find another lipstick that beats Tom Ford Lip Color. It’s the most luxurious formula I’ve ever tried and I love offering my clients the best of the best.
  • Lipstick (Steal) — The L’Oreal Collection Prive Doutzen Edition is one of the prettiest nude collections out there and such a steal.
  • Lip Stain (Splurge) –Everyone that I’ve given the Chosungah 22 Dual Lip Tint & Gloss to has died over it as much as I had. It absolutely will not budge until you wash it off.
  • Lip Stain (Steal) — Ulta Double Duty Lip Stain & Balm isn’t drying like a lot of lip stains and the balm on the other end makes it feel really good too.

TBDBestof2015-Breakthrough

BEST BREAKTHROUGH GEMS:

  • Cover Fx Custom Cover Drops — This magic bottle is filled with a super-concentrated and incredibly-thin liquid that comes in 24 shades and I add a few drops to anything I want to add more coverage to (foundation or tinted moisturizer) or to make my own foundation, I add it to a primer, serum, lotion or face oil. Or sometimes I use it as a spot concealer on its own. There is nothing out there like it.
  • Chosungah 22 Brow Maker — it looks like a magic marker but the wand has bristles that you can use to tint the hairs by brushing it through them and a pointed end that you can draw with. It comes in four shades and I keep all of them in my kit.
  • Cushion Compacts — Such an innovative product that I wish I would have thought of! So portable and such thin formulas. I love this one ($$$) and this one ($$).
  • Vera Mona Dry Brush Cleaner — Obviously clean brushes are a must for me in between clients and jobs. But sometimes I try a color and want to use the same brush immediately for another color. Instead of washing it and having to wait for it to dry, I just swirl it around this cleaning system and it’s instantly clean and dry!

BEAUTY SHOP STOP: URBAN OUTFITTERS

photo/post: kristin ess

Recently I’ve noticed that Urban Outfitters has been stepping up their beauty game in a big way. They used to dedicate maybe a table or two to random nail polishes and lip glosses, but lately I’ve noticed they’re creating full blown beauty spaces/sections in the stores. A) That’s very smart of them because beauty related products are often the quickest impulse buys and B) It’s very convenient for ME. I’ve been stalking the UO beauty section online for a long time because they always seem to bring in the tried and true products, but they’re really good at selecting all the cool new stuff. But now it’s nice to know they’re stocking up in-store. As I’m sure you’re wondering– no, this is not a sponsored post. I just really love what they’re doing in these little beauty spaces so much and wanted to share. Here are some of the most interesting things I’ve purchased and a couple things I still want to pick up…

urban outiftters beauty roundup the beauty dept

  1. COSMETIC TOWER  These little things are an investment but I LOVE how they look on my vanity. Makes it easy to organize and easy to search for what you need.
  2. BROW AND EYE KIT Brow color is so important. Most of us naturally have a neutral or ashy shade to our brows. I use these in my studio on clients after they get their brows tinted to fill in any little sparse areas they may have naturally. You can get almost any shade by mixing these 3 colors.
  3. CUTICLE ART I don’t know why I think these are so cool. I’m toning down my nail art game right now so cuticle art seems logical? Haha. I love finger tat, so this is a fun way to get the look temporarily. They go behind your cuticle/fingernail. Maybe I need to do a post with these so you can see how they look…
  4. BEAUTY DUST I loooooove this stuff. Again– it’s a little pricey but worth it. I put this in my tea, sprinkle some on my acai bowls, etc… it’s loaded with ingredients that will give a healthy boost to your skin, hair and nails. (and that packaging is KEWT)
  5. OIL NAIL TREATMENT Not only do Paul & Joe have the cutest packaging but this cuticle oil is AMAZE. I always have my hands in water and hair color so cuticle oil is a must. I keep this within reach when I’m working in the studio, too!

  1. DRY SHAMPOO WITH NETTLE A lot of people don’t realize that there’s more than one Klorane dry shampoo. This one has nettle for stimulating the scalp and this one is much more “powdery” to me. This is the particular one I use. (They also make one now for brunettes with a slight natural tint! You can find it in the related products when you click this link)
  2. SWIM SPRAY NEEEEEEEEED this for summer if you plan on swimming. Can’t stress it enough. This vitamin C treatment eliminates irritation and “that crusty feeling” caused by chlorine residue. If you are going to be in a pool and you don’t have this, I am going to be SO mad at you! (Okay, not mad but seriously disappointed.)
  3. CORIOLISS TOOL This thing is fun! It’s a flat iron and curling iron in one. I’ve been able to teach flat iron waves to the most uncoordinated clients with this contraption. Also nice to travel with to save space.
  4. COCONUT MILK SHAMPOO I’m just really into the smell and feel but the best part is it’s sulfate free! I like this because it still feels cleansing.
  5. DRY SHAMPOO WITH OAT MILK The classic. This is the Klorane most people use. I’m just glad it’s carried somewhere as accessible as UO.

  1. EXTRA LONG BARRETTE I have a tutorial coming up this week with a long barrette. I’m very into these AND half up hair. So 90’s. This one also comes in tortoiseshell.
  2. PIN KIT UMMMMMM HI! Get this. Immediately. I am SO into this. I got one for myself (because it fits in my purse) and I buy them for assistants because it’s an INCREDIBLE starter pin kit but also so small and compact for being on set or on the go! This is definitely something every girl needs in their bathroom to do all these updos and hairstyles like a pro. The right tools and pins can seriously change your hair game. And it’s SO organized.
  3. BATISTE DRY SHAMPOO I know we’re getting into a lot of dry shampoos but there are so many different kinds. What I love about Batiste is the price and how many scent options they have. Whether you like sweet or clean or unscented they have you covered. They also have colored dry shampoos which is awesome for darker hair colors.
  4. SEA DRY SHAMPOO Okay, love this because you can sprinkle it on and it’s all natch. Let’s say my hair is on day 2 or 3 and I decide to do a pony. The spray version might blow the hairs all over causing fly aways. But with this, I can sprinkle it on and tap it in and everything stay in place. It’s just a preference thing and you get a little more control over where this goes. Also this particular one is made with natural ingredients like rice powder and kaolin clay. There’s really nothing natural about Batiste (sorry, Batiste!)
  5. ROSE MILK BATH SOAK What can I say. I like a luxurious bath from time to time. Treat yoself. It’s beautiful and smells like heaven (and is very instgrammable which is obviously most important).

  1. COCOOIL I love coconut scented things, especially for summer (winter, spring and fall)! This beach spray is amazing for poolside or beachside days, creating a very low-maintenance natural wave when scrunched into wet hair. It keeps the hair from frizzing up and has some coconut oil in it to keep your hair from feeling dry! A little goes a long way in my experience.
  2. JASMINE HAIR PERFUME Fully into these hair perfumes. They’re soooooo light and so refreshing. There’s jasmine, rose and vanilla. I thought I would like the vanilla most but jasmine’s where it’s at for me. Spray a little into your hair after a “long night” so you don’t have to go in to work smelling like regret.
  3. MERMAID SHINE HAIR SPRAY I’ll buy anything that says “Mermaid Hair” on it. The end. (Not joking)
  4. GREEN TEA SHAMPOO A lot of my clients who use sulfate free shampoos say they love the way their hair feels but they never really feel like their scalp gets super clean. I find that this one does the trick. It somehow feels more “squeaky clean” than most sulfate free shampoos. I only use this once a week to get my hair canvas super clean, eliminating any residue build up.
  5. HAIR SERUM If you’re trying to grow your hair faster and longer, you should definitely look into hair pills because you really want to nourish from the inside, out. But don’t forget about nourishing the scalp at the same time. This is made to rub into your scalp to fortify, protect and encourage growth. If you’re already taking hair pills and feel you need a little something more, add this into your mix!

  1. ARGAN HAIR OIL This is a classic go-to for me. All natural argan oil from
  2. BAMBOO WET BRUSH I’ve talked about these brushes a million times. This one is the same, it’s just bamboo/wood and a new sophisticated look for WetBrush. I always set a hot curling iron on the plastic ones which is the main reason I wanted to get the wood one! It also feels more like a professional tool than the plastic ones.
  3. MATTE POMADE I love a matte pomade. I use it for tutorials all the time, like when we style bobs and lobs! I love mixing matte pomade together with a serum and working it into waves to give them that second day look. This product cocktail is my favorite ever. But it’s also incredible for shorter lengths like pixie cuts because you can get so much texture!
  4. MERMAID SEA SALT HAIR SPRAY I stand by my mermaid hair obsessions. This one’s for the natural girls. It’s literally pink sea salt, coconut oil and water. I was pulled in by the packaging but impressed by the product. Simple is sometimes best.
  5. BEACH WAVE IRON Clip your hair in, push a button and boom. This thing does all the work for you. I still suggest sliding clamp through the ends the same way I did HERE as well as using the products from that tutorial to get a more natural beauty look.

I hope you guys enjoyed this lil Urban Outfitters beauty round up! Are you into these kinds of shopping sprees? Should we do more? We don’t normally do round ups from a particular store but could be a fun thing for future posts. What are some of your favorite places to look for the newest, coolest beauty buys??

CURRENT FAVORITE

PHOTOS/POST: KRISTIN ESS

As a hairstylist I’m always looking for a favorite new product or tool. Sometimes the thing you end up loving the most was right under your nose the whole time. Undone texture is having a mega moment right now and for the most part we want our FLAT IRON WAVES and CURLING IRON WAVES to look less pattern-y and a bit more natural.

When I discovered my CURRENT FAVORITE PRODUCT for undone texture, it was a total accident. I’ve shared a trick before that involves this spray waaaaay back in 2011, remember? That’s exactly what I was doing– adding a little moisture back into the hair so I could keep curling until I got the texture I wanted. But when I sprayed that superfine mist over the waves and scrunched it in, what I got was a gorgeous diffusion of the waves I had made with the iron. It just took the overly “styled” look away. It’s hard to believe my favorite new trick is simply WATER, but it is. A lot of people are probably wondering if this can be done using a regular spray bottle, but I’ve found that it’s not the same. Regular spray bottles put out too much water at once causing the hair to become too wet which will then cause it to return to it’s natural texture or go flat. There’s definitely a big difference in the fine mist from THIS ONE and any other sprayer.

Above I’ve shown you the finished look. Below are some photos as THE SPRAY is being used. You want to avoid spraying it at the root and focus more from middle to ends. Just a little will do. Then scrunch it in. Avoid pulling on the hair or dragging your fingers through it when it’s wet because you will drag the waves out and flatten your hair.

Here’s the “before hair” with some very subtle waves using a 1 1/2″ barrel iron.

Spray a light veil of water, focusing middle to ends and all the way from front to back. Begin scrunching right away.

Once you’ve scrunched all the water in, let it air dry. Scrunch a little more if you need to.

The waves and texture will come together as it air dries. This hair was prepped with MOUSSE when it was wet, before blowdrying. So you’re really using the hold from the mousse as well when you add the EVIAN SPRAY. If you try this, let us know! Would love to hear if you love it as much as we do!
