HOLD THE SHIMMER!

A lot of us are a little weary of matte products, believing that an all-matte face will make you look lifeless… but I’m here to say you should reconsider every now and then! There’s something ultra modern + chic about a matte eye paired with a matte cheek and a matte lip. I had the pleasure of doing the lovely Anna Paquin’s makeup for this Emmy Magazine story {HBO’s True Blood returns on Sunday; set your dvr’s!} and there isn’t an ounce of shimmer used on her. I wish you could have seen it in person as it created a moodiness that was very sultry and almost velvety. Here’s exactly what I used so you can re-create it:

    FACE + CONTOUR
Apply an HD Foundation {I used Make Up For Ever for its gorgeous matte finish and huge range of shades} with a foundation brush or sponge all over the face and neck. Set everything with Cover FX’s Matte FX Powder in your shade then dust Smashbox Bronze Lights in Sunkissed Matte in the hollow of the cheeks, temples, along the hairline + jawlines to contour the face.

EYES

I used Too Faced’s Matte Eye shadow palette because I love having all my matte shadows in one palette. Start from the lashlines and work upwards in this order:

LASHLINE: Sweep the Midnight shade back and forth along your top + bottom lashlines in lieu of a pencil.

LID: Dust the Coffee Bean shade all over the lid.

CREASE: Trace the Chinchilla shade directly in the crease of your lid.

ABOVE THE CREASE: Sweep the Lorac Peach Blush just above the crease to add the drama and bring everything to life. Then with a liner brush, trace just below the bottom lashline to create a reflection of the upper lid.

EDGE BLENDING: Blend the edges of the shadow with Tufted Suede so there are no hard lines.

MASCARA: I used one of my long-time favorites by Ellis Faas {E401} for its amazing creamy texture.

CHEEKS

Swirl Lorac Blush along the cheekbones.

LIP

Finish the look with Tarte LipSurgence Matte Lip Tint in Hope.
